Observations And Opinions On CORE Reorganization Meeting.
Observations And Opinions On CORE Reorganization Meeting.
I attended COREs Tuesday night reorganization meeting. It was well lead and organized. I could tell some thought and preparation had went into the planning, yet the leadership had allowed flexibility for comments and input for the restructuring. It was well attended and I sensed that I was surrounded by many intelligent, well informed, and thoughtful people. I was impressed by the number of political officials and hopefuls who attended, and they all deserve commendation for attending. Their input was often informative and educational. Their presence gave evidence that CORE does carry some weight in the Evansville community.
A mission statement of education, engagement and empowerment was presented along with a suggestion that the group would be named E3. One of the objectives discussed was that this group could be a resource where leaders and citizens could come together to understand both the function and concerns of our leaders while they also heard our voice. The majority of us learned for the first time from Cheryl Musgrave exactly how the property tax cap works. That einformation was a great example of the education function of the mission statement.
Most of the time was spent listing perceived concerns which were listed on poster boards hung on the walls and lightly discussed. A few of us described the concerns posted as weeds which included concerns for roads and sidewalks, transparency and accountability in government, health risk from fluoride and meters, government waste, blight in Evansville, and the fate of Mesker Amphitheater. To“cut down the weeds†an informal straw poll was taken in which we were asked to vote for our top three. Transparency in government, financial accountability, and explanations of the function of the DMD were the top three picks. I was pleased to see that there was a commitment to, while asking for explanations, witch hunts not being tolerated.
My top pick was Mesker Amphitheater. While the top picks by all means are top shelve concerns, they are intangible, a bit trite in political jargon, and difficult to measure, I feel that a focus on Mesker could bring the top issue to bare with a tangible asset to show for our efforts. Mesker already has the attention of our residents and a soft place in their hearts with a pleasant spot in their memories. Concerns like financially accountability, what happened to the trust fund? Responsibility, is an amphitheater a justifiable function of government or should it be privately supported? dealing with blighted properties, what do we save or tear down? and why are there funds to purchase properties far above market value but not save a gift and treasure to our city?
Never the less, whatever direction this E3 group proceeds, I expect to see positive and long lasting change come from it’s efforts. Perhaps it is a clump of weeds after the first meeting, but I predict that in a short time it will be well groomed lawn.
Thanks
Jerry Wirth

Governor Pence Commends Indianapolis Motor Speedway on Decision to Lift Broadcast Blackout of the Indy 500 in Central Indiana
Indianapolis – Governor Mike Pence today issued the following statement commending the Indianapolis Motor Speedway for its decision to lift the local television blackout in central Indiana in light of the sellout of all reserved seating, hospitality suites and infield general admission tickets for the Indianapolis 500:
“I commend the Hulman-George family and the Indianapolis Motor Speedway for their historic decision to lift the television blackout in central Indiana, allowing Hoosiers to enjoy the worldwide broadcast of the Greatest Spectacle in Racing live. This decision was made possible by the sellout of all reserved seating, hospitality suites and general admission. This historic decision and the sellout on 16th Street is a testament to the leadership of the Hulman-George family, the team at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and the support the people of Indiana provided over the last several years to enable the improvements that will benefit race fans, our capital city, and our state for generations to come.â€
Background:
Governor Pence signed into law House Enrolled Act 1544-2013 on May 10, 2013, which allowed for the issuance of bonds for improvements at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway that were completed in anticipation of the 100th running of the Indianapolis 500. Those improvements include suite and upper deck seating renovations, redevelopment of the entry gate near 16th Street and Georgetown Road, as well as video board upgrades and a new scoring pylon along the front straightaway. As part of this commitment, the Indianapolis Motor Speedway will make an annual $2 million lease payment to the state of Indiana for 20 years.
Aces fall short in Valley tournament opener
TERRE HAUTE – A two-run eighth wouldn’t prove enough for the University of Evansville baseball team on Wednesday morning as the fifth-seeded Purple Aces dropped a 4-3 decision to fourth-seeded Southern Illinois in the opening game of the Missouri Valley Championship at Bob Warn Field.
“Patrick had to pitch around some things today, and he did a great job,†Carroll said. “The loss isn’t on our pitchers today. It’s unfortunate because I think they did enough to win. Our offense really didn’t click when we had runners in scoring position. Tomorrow’s going to be an exciting day for us. We’re going to come out here and try to survive and advance.â€
The Aces, who will return to the field at 8 a.m. Central Thursday morning for an elimination game, dropped to 27-26 on the season.
Missed opportunities were once again the story for the Aces, who put a leadoff runner on base in four consecutive innings before finally cashing in a score with a Korbin Williams sacrifice fly in the sixth inning.
By that point, SIU (31-23-1) was already ahead, having scored a pair of runs off of UE starting pitcher Patrick Schnieders in the third and fourth innings.
Schnieders was pegged with the loss, as he dropped to 4-6 on the season. He gave up a pair of scores (one earned) on seven hits over five innings of work.
Southern Illinois pushed its advantage out to three runs with a Connor Kopach triple and Logan Blackfan single.
UE responded in kind in the ensuing half-inning as Boomer Synek plated a score with a sacrifice fly, and Trey Hair brought another home on a single to right to make it 4-3. However, the Aces would strand three runners on base over the remainder of the game as SIU punched its ticket to the next round.
UE was led on the day by the trio of Josh Jyawook, Trey Hair and Travis Tokarek, who accounted for six of the Aces’ eight hits on the day.
The Aces will meet the loser of the contest between Dallas Baptist and Illinois State, which will take place later on Wednesday. First pitch is set for 8 a.m. Central time.
