Cruz Defends Speech, Spars With Trump Supporters in Explosive Meeting With Texas Delegation

In a very tense meeting with the Texas delegation Thursday morning at the Republican National Convention, Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) was asked repeatedly to explain his behavior the previous night. Cruz gave a speech in which he laid out a conservative vision for the future, but the message was overshadowed by what wasn’t in his speech – a Donald Trump endorsement. Instead of telling voters to support the GOP nominee, he told them to “vote their conscience” – a seeming nod to the “Never Trump” movement, who used the same word on Monday when they tried to prevent a Trump nomination.

Just like Wednesday night’s speech, Cruz was met with applause, yet dismissed with boos on Thursday.

Cruz defended his speech to the Texas delegates by insisting he never said one bad word about Donald Trump, and he doesn’t intend to in the future.

“I won’t be talking negative about Trump going forward,” he promised.

It wasn’t so much about Donald Trump, Cruz argued, but about the need to defend the United States of America.

“This is about standing for what we believe in,” he said.

“They knew exactly what I was going to say,” Cruz said, convincing him that they believed his delivering that message would encourage people to get out to vote.

“I asked Americans – do not stay home in November.”

Cruz also insisted his remarks were intended to help Trump defeat Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton.

His speech, he said, was an “outline to Trump and his campaign on how to win.

The dominant message has to be freedom, Cruz urged. If “email server” is last word, “we’re going to lose.”

Yet, Cruz then appeared to throw some shade at Trump supporters who booed him off stage last night.

It was somewhat dismaying, he said, that apparently some of Donald’s biggest partisan supporters, when they heard him say people should vote for someone they trust and they know will defend the Constitution, they immediately began booing.

“What does it say when you stand up and say vote your conscience and rabid supporters of our party say ‘what a horrible thing to say?’” he asked.

During the question and answer section, Cruz sparred with a few Trump supporters, one of whom (loudly) reminded the Texas senator he was supposed to honor his pledge and support the party.

Cruz said he’s happy to talk to the gentleman, but will “not get in a screaming match” with him. “I believe in treating people with civility,” he said.

“I’m going to defend your rights even to insult me,” he said to another combative attendee demanding to know why Cruz won’t endorse Trump.

Cruz then proved this was still a personal issue, referencing Trump’s attacks on both his wife Heidi and his father Rafael.

Cruz spoke at the convention, “despite the fact” that the Trump campaign has never taken back what they said about his family, he said.

“I am not in the habit of supporting people who attack my wife and attack my father,” he said.

When asked if Cruz will be voting for Trump, he deferred, only noting who he will not be voting for.

“I can tell you, I’m not voting for Hillary.”

Between Wednesday’s night’s speech and Thursday morning’s combative meeting, it begs the question whether Cruz is being sincere, or just trying to incite trouble and prepare himself for a 2020 presidential run.

I’ll let another Texas delegate have the last word.

“I have to say, it’s not about Trump or Cruz, it’s about the United States of America.”

Churchill Downs Racing Club’ Dial Me Gives 200 Owners First Victory Lanerie sweeps ostrich, camel races

 “Was that a maiden race at Ellis or the Kentucky Derby?” trainer D. Wayne Lukas asked by phone from Saratoga minutes after Dial Me won Ellis Park’s seventh race for 2-year-old fillies Saturday afternoon.
It was Dial Me’s second start and also reflected the first victory for the Churchill Downs Racing Club, a pair of 200-person partnerships that cost $500 per participant to provide the experience of racehorse ownership without the large investment. Warrior’s Club, the first horse bought by the Churchill Downs Racing Club, sold out so quickly that Dial Me was bought and offered as a second partnership. Warrior’s Club also has run twice, finishing third earlier this meet.
Dial Me wore down favored Truthful to win by three-quarters of a length under Brian Hernandez Jr. She paid $7 to win as the second choice. Because of the massive crowd of Dial Me’s owners and their friends and family, track photographer Kurtis Coady staged the winner’s circle ceremony on the racetrack rather than in the traditional winner’s circle. 
“I wouldn’t be able to tell the difference here, based on the winner’s circle,” Gary Palmisano, Churchill’s VIP services manager who oversees the partnerships, told Lukas, the four-time Kentucky Derby winner who trains both Dial Me and Warrior’s Club. “My heart’s beating out of my chest.”
Said Lukas: “It’s extremely gratifying and special to bring that many people that much happiness for just a small amount (of investment). It really, really is special. It was fun to watch it.”
“That was awesome,” Palmisano said. “She’s always shown a lot of ability. Wayne was very high on her; I was high on her. She’s always been forwardly training. Super fantastic. There were about 100 people here today, just overwhelmed with emotion. Hall of Fame trainer, one of my best friends riding, this was just a great experience. Looking forward to more, and we still have the colt, who has a lot of ability.”
One owner not at the track was Kent Taylor, sports director for WAVE-3 in Louisville. Taylor and wife Connie Leonard are among Dial Me’s 200 investors, but Taylor was committed to a charity softball game. He later watched video of the race posted on Facebook.
“It was awesome,” Taylor said by phone. “This whole process has been so cool. It’s just icing on the cake to be even competitive. But to win a race, it’s just an amazing feeling. I can’t really put it into words.”
Imagine if he’d actually been there. “I know. I can’t imagine,” Taylor said with a laugh. “I’d probably be going crazy. She looked good out of the gate, then she dropped back a little bit. When she turned for home and he pulled her out a little bit and she took off, it was so impressive. I’m sure the people who were there went absolutely nuts.”

Too bad for Corey Lanerie that Ellis’ annual exotic animal races – this time an ostrich and camel heat – didn’t count toward his career win total, which stands at 3,966.
Lanerie won the ostrich race for the second time, but was breaking his maiden in the camel division. He was jokingly asked which was more exciting, approaching 4,000 victories or winning a camel race.
“Winning a camel race,” he joked back. “Finally I didn’t have Calvin (Borel) to deal with. I got to win. Calvin beat me twice by a hair. That was fun. I finally had a camel run today.”
Two races earlier, Lanerie’s ostrich was slammed at the start when Rafael Mojica’s bird bore in at the break from the rail. But Lanerie extricated himself unscathed, quickly took a clear lead and led by so many lengths that he was waving to the crowd well before the wire.
 
“You just want to keep your balance,” he said. “You’re so top heavy on them that if you get forward or sideways, you throw them off balance and they can fall. It’s just fun. It’s a challenge to get on ’em. Everyone in there (the jocks’ room), thinks I’m crazy, so that’s why I do it.
“I was disappointed the first couple of steps, because I thought my race was over. But he recovered and was the best ostrich today…. This was so fun. The rest of them, that’s our job. If I fall off this one or don’t win, I don’t have to come back and answer to the connections ‘what happened?’ It’s just me and the bird for fun. It’s not somebody’s livelihood, something they’re paying their bills with.”

Day After His Death, Tom McCarthy’s Blame Angel Wins For Trainer’s Sons

“Divine intervention in the nightcap,” Ellis Park announcer Jimmy McNerney told the crowd after Blame Angel captured Friday’s eighth race by 2 3/4 lengths over Batten the Hatches.

Blame Angel previously ran on Father’s Day at Churchill Downs, winning at 17-1 odds in what proved the last horse to run with Tom R. McCarthy as trainer. McCarthy died Thursday morning at age 82 in Louisville after battling stage 4 melanoma. Blame Angel a day later in the $20,000 claiming race became the first horse to run with his son, Tom S., as the trainer of record, though he long had been involved with his dad’s horses. Tim McCarthy, also Tom R.’s son, is co-owner of the 4-year-old Blame Angel with Gilbert Nutt of Louisville.

“When I pulled off I-64 onto I-69” outside of Evansville, “I looked up and I said, ‘Help us out today. Give us some help because I know you’ll push us,’” Tom S. said. “And he did. So we won on Father’s Day. He was watching, wasn’t at the track because he was very, very ill. And we won today. So all is good.”

Tom R. McCarthy was the feel-good story heading into the 2009 Kentucky Derby. He was was a retired biology teacher and high-school principal who long had trained and owned a horse or two on the side. He had no horses when he claimed General Quarters for $20,000 the first time the gray colt ran.

McCarthy’s one-horse stable burst onto the Kentucky Derby scene with the gray General Quarters taking Keeneland’s Grade I Toyota Blue Grass. Though he did not run well in the Derby – finishing 10th with a tough trip – he returned to the next Derby Day to win the Grade I Woodford Reserve Turf Classic in his grass debut.

Tom R. had four horses in training at Churchill Downs’ Trackside training center, their care overseen by Tom S. and retired engineer Jerry Hills, Tom R.’s former student and now owner. There also are 2-year-olds sired by General Quarters in Lexington owned by family and friends and a yearling in Ocala, along with two mares in foal to General Quarters. And there’s a four-month-old colt by General Quarters that will be named Tom’s Little General.

Blame Angel was ridden at Ellis by Brian Hernandez Jr. After the winner’s circle presentation, jockeys Robby Albarado (who during one stretch road General Quarters as a 4-year-old) and Miguel Mena (who rode Blame Angel in his Churchill victory but was committed to another horse Friday) came up to offer their congratulations and condolences to the McCarthy brothers.

“It makes you want to cry,” said Hills, who began helping his former teacher at the barn before the 2009 Blue Grass and wound up being partners in horses with Tom S. “That was tough.”

On the racetrack, you deal with sorrow the same way you deal with joy: Go to work the next day. So the McCarthy boys never thought about scratching.

“Friends of mine were all like, ‘You’re going to scratch him,’” Tom S. said. “I said, ‘Noooo. Dad would want him to go.’”

Blame Angel was claimed for $30,000 1 1/2 years ago and now has won five of 12 starts for the McCarthy family.

McCarthy arrangements: A funeral mass will take place Tuesday at 10 a.m. ET at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, 501 Cherrywood Road, Louisville, with private burial to follow. Visitation is 2-8 p.m. Monday at Ratterman and Sons, 3800 Bardstown Road in Louisville.
