IU Men’s Swimming & Diving Ranked No. 1, Women 12th in CSCAA Poll

0

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The Indiana University men’s swimming and diving team is ranked No. 1 in the nation in the first College Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA)/TYR Top 25 Swimming & Diving Poll released on Wednesday. The Hoosier women’s team is ranked No. 12 in the country.

“It is an honor to be recognized as the No. 1 team in the nation,” IU head swimming coach Ray Looze said. “I believe the last time we held this ranking was at the end of the 1973 season. We realize as a program the most important ranking is the last one and we will work hard to finish as highly as possible. All our swimmers and divers are excited to have the NCAA Championships in Indianapolis at the IU Natatorium this coming March.”

The Hoosier men got the 2016-17 season off to a tremendous start this past weekend, sweeping a two-day tri-meet with No. 2 Texas and No. 8 Florida in Bloomington. The Longhorns are the two-time defending NCAA Champions, while Florida placed third last year at the NCAA’s.

The IU women also started the year off well, sweeping No. 18 Florida in two meets, but falling to No. 7 Texas. Rankings are compiled by CSCAA-member coaches and released on a bi-weekly basis.  The next polls will be released November 9, 2016.

The Indiana men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams will be back in the pool this Friday, Oct. 28 at 11:00 a.m. ET when the Hoosiers face Kentucky and Tennessee in a tri-meet of nationally-ranked squads in Lexington.

Sullivan Examines Research On Education Funding

0

STATEHOUSE (Oct. 26, 2016) — State Rep. Holli Sullivan (R-Evansville) this week joined leaders from around the country to learn more about research conducted on outcomes-based funding policies for higher education.

Sullivan said these policies are currently used in determining the amount of state funds given to public colleges and universities in Indiana. They measure things like student enrollment compared to degree completion rates.

“Outcomes-based funding is especially meant to help at-risk students who often leave post-secondary education in debt without degrees and good job prospects,” Sullivan said.

The two-day workshop, Financing Student Outcomes and Equity in Postsecondary Education: Lessons from Leading States, was hosted by the Lumina Foundation. The workshop featured data collected by Research for Action (RFA), an education research organization. The group took an in-depth look at Indiana, Ohio and Tennessee’s funding of higher education and delivered the information to stakeholders.

“I attended these meetings to be the first to hear about new research completed by RFA on Indiana’s policies,” Sullivan said. “I believe it’s imperative we continue to put student successes first and use data-driven formulas in how we fund our schools.”

As a member of the House Ways and Means Committee, Sullivan works to help build Indiana’s biennial budget, which determines how state revenues are distributed to education, infrastructure, salaries, public pensions, public assistance, corrections, Medicaid and transportation.

She said an immense amount of data was shared at the workshop about policies that have been successful, and others that have been not so successful, in Indiana and surrounding states.

“Indiana’s data looks much better than most and I’m encouraged by the work that’s been accomplished thus far,” Sullivan said. “Using the data during this budget session ensures we will continue to measure our state’s successes. The data shows that our higher education is a source is a source of pride for Indiana and continues to head in the right direction.”

USI cross country programs surge in rankings after GLVC titles

0

EVASNVILLE. Ind. – Both University of Southern Indiana cross country programs climbed in the latest U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association Top 25 rankings after taking both team titles at the GLVC Championships. The men surged three positions to No. 7, while the women moved a single spot to No. 6.
Seven All-GLVC runners at the conference championships sealed the men’s 12th-consecutive GLVC championship and 24th overall, the most of any sport in GLVC history. Junior Bastian Grau (Höchstadt, Germany) paced the Screaming Eagles with a runner-up performance, while senior Chase Broughton(Marengo, Indiana) also earned a top-five finish placing fourth. Freshman Nathan Hall (Springfield, Missouri) earned GLVC Freshman of the year honors with a 13th-place finish, the eighth time and second-straight year a USI runner has earned the award.

With seven of 10 schools shifting position in the USTFCCCA Top 10, the Eagles move into seventh after gaining 18 more points in the poll. Colorado School of Mines jumped to the top spot of the poll, while Midwest Region foe Grand Valley State University remained in second.

In the Midwest Region, the top two spots remain unchanged with Grand Valley State and USI atop the list. The following five places all shifted after the conference championships week.
Improving by a single spot in the USTFCCCA Top 25 and Midwest Region rankings, the USI women’s cross country team jumped Cedarville University in both polls. In the national poll, USI sits five points outside the top five in sixth with 161 points. Grand Valley State continues to lead the region poll with a second place ranking in the USTFCCCA Top 25.

Junior Emily Roberts (Fredericktown, Ohio) earned the first GLVC Runner of the Year award for the USI women’s program since 2011 to help the Eagles win their sixth-straight GLVC championship. The time of 20 minutes, 36.03 seconds for Roberts set a new GLVC record, as did the USI margin of victory (55 points). Senior Jessica Reeves (Midland, Michigan) earned a second place finish, while three others joined the duo on the All-GLVC team.

USI returns to action November 5 when it hosts the NCAA Division II Midwest Region Championships at Angel Mounds.

USI Women’s Hoops tabbed for 4th-place finish in GLVC East

0

EVANSVILLE, Ind.—Great Lakes Valley Conference coaches are forecasting a fourth-place finish in the GLVC East Division for University of Southern Indiana Women’s Basketball in 2016-17. The prediction came in the release of the GLVC Women’s Basketball Preseason Poll Wednesday afternoon.

USI, which received 80 points in the poll, returns 12 players, 11 letterwinners, and all five starters from a squad that was 14-13 overall and 7-11 in league play a year ago.

Last year’s GLVC Tournament champion, Bellarmine University, was the favorite in the East Division as it received 115 points and 10 first-place votes. Lewis University, the GLVC East Division champion a year ago, garnered 110 points and six first-place votes, while Saint Joseph’s College (81 points) and the University of Indianapolis (62 points) sandwiched USI to round out the top-five picks.

McKendree University and the University of Wisconsin-Parkside each garnered 48 points to tie for sixth in the poll, while the University of Illinois Springfield (24 points) rounded out the East Division predictions.

Drury University was the unanimous choice to win the West Division as it claimed 15 first-place votes and 120 points, while Quincy University (103 points and one first-place vote) was picked second.

Truman State University (84 points), Rockhurst University (82 points) and the University of Missouri-St. Louis (64 points) rounded out the top five choices, while Maryville University (43 points), William Jewell College (41 points) and Missouri University of Science & Technology (31 points) rounded out the West Division picks.

Included in USI’s returnees are two All-GLVC honorees in senior forward Hannah Wascher (Rantoul, Illinois) and senior guard Tanner Marcum (New Albany, Indiana). Wascher led USI with 12.9 points and 7.6 rebounds per game a year ago, while Marcum averaged 12.0 points and 3.3 assists per contest.

USI opens the 2016-17 season with an exhibition bout versus Butler University November 6 in Indianapolis. The Screaming Eagles begin the regular season versus Roosevelt University November 11 at the Physical Activities Center, while GLVC play starts December 1 when USI visits McKendree University.

The GLVC Championship Tournament (quarterfinals-championship) returns to Evansville and the Ford Center March 2-5, with the women’s games taking place March 3-5.
