IS IT TRUE JUNE 6, 2017

5

IS IT TRUE the Evansville Vanderburgh School Corporation as the rightful owner of Bosse Field and the taxing authority empowered to raise taxes to do some much needed work on the old stadium seems to be getting cold feet?…Evansville Mayor Lloyd Winnecke also is cautioning the EVSC on pulling the trigger on increasing taxes to fix up Bosse Field?…one thing for sure is that Bosse Field, like our sewers, roads, and water pipes are going to fix themselves so the Mayor’s stance against the EVSC raising taxes is sort of perplexing?…Superintendent David Smith is getting jumpy about it too, going so far as to offer the old place up for $1?…we are wondering if there is about to be a case of history repeating itself with the saga of Roberts Stadium used as a model?…we won’t be at all surprised if the repairs needed at Bosse Field will be used to justify spending upwards of $50 Million on a new ballpark somewhere near downtown Evansville?…remember where you heard this first, because creating a crisis to spend money on fun and games has worked before in Evansville, Indiana?

IS IT TRUE we find School Board member Mike Duckworth remarks concerning Bosse Field published in the Sundays Courier and Press very interesting?  …that Duckworth told John Martin of the Courier and Press “that he agrees with other school Board members that owning a baseball park doesn’t meet with the school district core mission of education”?  …if Mr. Duckworth feels that way then why is the heck did he agree to purchase a $3 1/2 million dollar golf course in rural Vanderburgh County?  …if a baseball field doesn’t have  any educational value why should a $3 1/2 golf course have any?

IS IT TRUE that if one wants to see an example of how to run a government into the ground all one must do is look at what just happened across the Wabash River in the State of Illinois?…the bond rating for Illinois was just lowered to BBB- which is one step away from being considered to be a “junk” investment vehicle?…the State of Illinois which is under control of Chicagoland has not passed a budget in two years?…these financial wizards have missed $14 Billion in legitimate payments which has caused them to rack up $1 Billion in fees and penalties that are a burden on the people of the state and a leach on the public infrastructure?…the interest rate on any new debt that Illinois will have to issue to pay off existing debt will be at an interest rate that is 2.5% higher than a state or city that enjoys a AAA rating?…that Billion dollars in fees and penalties will cost the people of Illinois $45 Million per year to carry because their state legislature is too inept to even authorize a budget so they can pay their bills?…the $14 Billion will add $630 Million in debt service because of this fiscal ineptness?…the State of Illinois has joined the banana republics of Panama, Peru, and Spain when it comes to their credit rating?…this is close enough to home to be used as a teaching tool for Indiana cities who are up against their own debt limits and struggling to make payments on fun and games nonsense?…there are reasons that three Governors of Illinois are in prison and this is a symptom that the graft of Chicago has not been eradicated in Springfield?

IS IT TRUE that Mesker Zoo Director Amos Morris is leaving his position in Evansville for a similar position in Fresno, California?…Mr. Amos has built a good reputation as a competent administrator and we wish him well?…we are not certain at this point if Evansville is a good training ground for people on the way up the career ladder or if good people who come in from elsewhere just don’t assimilate well into local circles and move on when the opportunity presents itself?…we wish Mr. Morris well in his new position and hope that someday he will return to Evansville for a concert at the new and improved Mesker Amphitheater?

IS IT TRUE we been watching with interest how Vanderburgh County Commissioner Ben Shoulders is adjusting to political life?  …initially Mr. Shoulders allowed himself to get involved in an issue concerning the firing of the Director of Burdette Park?  …that issue has been long resolved?  …since that time Commissioner Shoulders is getting to know how the political process works in Vanderburgh County?  …its also obvious that Commissioner Shoulders is finally doing his homework concerning governmental issues that face him? …we predict when all said and done that Commissioner Shoulders will make the people whom voted for him proud?

IS IT TRUE that Mayor Winnecke political promise that no one living in Lincoln Estates apartments will be evicted this week didn’t pan out?  …we have been told by reliable sources that several families and individuals have been evicted from Lincoln Estates Apartment over the last several days?

IS IT TRUE the Mayor Winnecke attempted  to convince the Evansville City Council to give him a $100,000 to help the families and individuals that are being evicted from Lincoln Estates because of non-payment of rent fail on deaf ears? …it looks like our tax and spend Mayor has just experienced a major public relations sit back?  …we hope one day that the Mayor will finally realize that “government should’t do for people what they should do for themselves”?

Todays “READERS POLL” question: Would you support the Vanderburgh County School Board divesting its interest in Bosse Field to the City of Evansville?

Governor Holcomb Requests Federal Low-Interest Disaster Loans for Washington County; 8 More Counties Would Benefit

0

As a result of recent flooding beginning on May 19, Governor Eric J. Holcomb today requested the U.S. Small Business Administration’s (SBA) disaster loan program for Washington County.

If declared, the contiguous counties of Clark, Crawford, Floyd, Harrison, Jackson, Lawrence, Orange and Scott would also qualify for the loans. If granted, residents, businesses and certain non-profit organizations affected would be eligible to apply.

“This flooding devastated residents of Washington County,” Gov. Holcomb said. “It left homes and businesses severely affected, and our goal is to offer assistance. The state is applying for low-interest disaster loans to provide that measure of help.”

The U.S. Small Business Administration administers the federal low-interest disaster loans program.

Gov. Holcomb has directed the Indiana Department of Homeland Security to continue coordinating state actions in the aftermath of these storms.

Horses, Workers Arriving At Ellis Park Month Before Meet

0
Horses, workers arriving at Ellis Park month before meet
‘Our enhanced purses have resonated with horsemen, and we expect to keep building on memorable 2016 season’ —  racing secretary Dan Bork

HENDERSON, Ky. (Thursday, June 1, 2017) — Horses — and those who care for them — are steadily arriving at Ellis Park, a month in advance of the thoroughbred track’s July 1-Labor Day meet. J.J. Gloria, Ellis’ stall superintendent, says 180 already are on the grounds with scores more expected well before the  deluge that hits right on top of the summer racing season.

Expected soon are at least 48 horses trained by Hall of Famer Steve Asmussen, whose division stabled at Ellis Park last year included 2017 Kentucky Derby runner-up Lookin At Lee. That colt, who won a maiden race and the $75,000 Ellis Park Juvenile at the track, also finished fourth in the Preakness Stakes and will contest the June 10 Belmont Stakes, the Triple Crown’s finale.

“We definitely have more horses than at the same time last year, and we’re getting a lot more inquiries from all over, really,” said Gloria, who has worked at Ellis off and on for 28 years. “I get new calls every day. The purse money is right now, so it’s worth it for them to come. And this is the best racetrack surface in the world. Go anywhere and show me a better one.”

Trainers who for the first time will either have their entire stable or a division based at Ellis include Brad Cox, Randy Morse, Ingrid Mason, Jose Castanon and Chris Davis.

“Our enhanced purses have resonated with horsemen, and we expect to keep building on the memorable 2016 season,” said racing secretary Dan Bork.

That also included maiden wins by the Kenny McPeek-trained Kentucky Oaks runner-up Daddys Lil Darling, now in England for Friday’s Group 1 Investec Oaks at legendary Epsom Downs, and the Dale Romans-trained Not This Time, who fell a head shy of winning the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile.

Some stall space remains available for stabling, Bork said. Here’s the Ellis Park condition book.

Ron Moquett was one of the first out-of-town horsemen to ship into Ellis, with about 35 horses. Among the 2-year-olds Moquett had training last summer at Ellis at some stage were future stakes-winner Uncontested and stakes-placed Petrov.

“The track is very kind here,” said Eddie Ruiz, a Moquett assistant who has trained on and off on his own. “Ron has confidence in the racetrack to bring those kinds of horses here. I watched Lookin At Lee run here, and (in 2015) Runhappy, who went on to be champion sprinter. You have good horses come here.”

Increased play on Historical Horse Racing terminals, the innovative parimutuel technology that provides a different gambling experience, and a $1.65 million transfer in purses and Kentucky Thoroughbred Development Fund purse supplements from Kentucky Downs will boost Ellis’ purses to record levels in the top-tier races. That includes maiden races carrying total purses of $40,000 for registered Kentucky-bred horses, which form the majority of those running.

“Obviously we need the stalls, but we’re going to support the racing,” said Cox, Ellis’ 2015 training champion whose horses currently rank No. 9 in North America in purse earnings ($3.4 million) and No. 10 in wins (79) in 2017. The purses are good, and we’ve had luck down there in some of the stakes the past couple of years. It seems like there are some quality baby races there. Dale has done a great job of preparing babies there and moving forward with them the second half of the year. You don’t have to go to Saratoga.”

John Hancock, a third-generation thoroughbred trainer from Henderson, predicted last year that Ellis Park would have its “meet of all meets.”

“And it was,” he said. “As good as last summer was, fans are in for a treat this year. There’s no doubt in my mind, with the caliber of horses and people coming, this will be even better.”

Hancock said one component is that Ellis’ local horsemen “have really stepped up” and that showed with horses who wintered at Henderson’s Riverside Downs training center winning seven races during Keeneland’s spring meet.

Hancock won five of those races, including with 2-year-old fillies Amberspatriot and Waki Patriot, who went on to be second (by a neck) and a troubled fourth, respectively, against boys in Churchill Downs’ Kentucky Juvenile. Now he’s looking at New York’s Astoria Stakes for them, while saying he has some other babies that might be as good or better and who likely will surface at Ellis.

Horses at Ellis Park mean an array of workers on the backstretch — people who will live and spend money in the area. Cox estimates his 30 horses to be stabled at the track will involve “15 or 16” employees. Hancock says he has 10 employees, not counting his heavily-involved family members, taking care of 30 horses. (Such jobs are lined up through individual stables and not the racetrack.)

“The horse industry here puts a lot of money in area farmers’ pockets,” Hancock said. “Feed companies, hay and straw. I bet that four months out of the year, Ellis Park is the biggest employer within 50-60 miles, with everybody who works in the industry, frontside and backside.”

More women being hired as general counsel

0

Il for www.theindinalawyer.com

A new report is hailing the increase in the number of women hired for general counsel jobs in Fortune 500 companies, a trend which is expected to continue.

The report by Russell Reynolds Associates found that the rate of hiring female candidates for top legal jobs at Fortune 500 companies jumped nearly 50 percent from 2012 to 2016. Twenty-four percent of the open general counsel positions at these businesses were filled with women in 2012 and by 2016, the portion had jumped to 35 percent.

Companies wanting general counsels who have previous experience working in-house is fueling the increase in female hiring. Since 2014, four out of five of all external candidates hired by Fortune 500 have worked in corporate legal departments.

In the past, companies made at least a third of external general counsel appointments from the top partner ranks at law firms. But women are still struggling to obtain equity partnerships or become firm mangers and practice group leaders, and the number of Fortune 500 general counsels hired from law firms has slid almost 50 percent since 2014 as companies look for candidates who can step into the leadership role of the legal department and immediately begin tackling the business issues.

This shift has increased the number of women in the general counsel candidate pool. Within the last three years, 91 percent of women hired externally had in-house experience and 61 percent had been a general counsel.

The report expects the trend to continue. With more women gaining in-house experience and competing for general counsel positions, their hiring prospects should continue to improve.
