Vectren Foundation Commits $100,000 to UE’s Hyde Hall Renovation Project
The Vectren Foundation has committed to a gift of $100,000 for the University of Evansville’s Hyde Hall renovation project. The funds will be used to increase the building’s energy efficiency through such upgrades as new heating, ventilation, and cooling systems (HVAC) and new windows.
President of Vectren South Brad Ellsworth noted that energy efficiency and education are two of Vectren’s major areas of interest and that the Hyde Hall renovation project addresses them both.
“Vectren is proud to partner with UE in providing students with an optimal learning environment that is not only more energy efficient, but also quieter and more comfortable,†added Ellsworth. “Energy efficiency is a win for the bottom line of the University too, as a better controlled energy environment will help reduce energy costs as well.â€
Hyde Hall is one of the school’s most used buildings. It houses Shanklin Theatre, home of UE’s nationally renowned undergraduate theatre program. The building also contains administrative offices for the William L. Ridgway College of Arts and Sciences and other faculty offices, classrooms, and core learning spaces. Construction is anticipated to begin in May 2018 with estimated completion in Fall 2019.

Vectren’s gifts to the University over the years include:
- A donation to University’s UEnvision campaign, which included upgrades to the Schroeder School of Business Building and construction of Ridgway University Center.
- Funds to help build a greenhouse on campus.
- The gift of a long-term lease of conservation land and a partnership with UE to open an outdoor classroom for environmental field study on the site. The area, located on 1,100 acres along the Wabash River, has been named the Vectren Conservation Park, University of Evansville Environmental Research Lab.
Gilda’s Club Evansville to Host 2nd Annual Rise for a Cause Breakfast Fundraiser
Fundraiser To Support Tri-State Youth And Families impacted By Cancer
Gilda’s Club Evansville is hosting their 2nd Annual Rise for a Cause Breakfast Fundraiser to support their youth and family program. The event will take place on Thursday morning, August 24 from 7:30-9:00am at Atlas World Group located at 1212 St. George Rd. Evansville.
“Supporting youth and families that are impacted by cancer is at the core of what we do at Gilda’s Club Evansville,†Melanie Atwood, Executive Director, exclaimed. “And we do that through the generosity of individuals and corporations that make it possible by attending and supporting our 2nd Annual Rise for a Cause breakfast.â€
The event is being sponsored by Northwestern Mutual, and will feature a hot buffet breakfast catered by Schnitzelbank. There is no cost to attend, but donations are appreciated. Speakers will include Jack Griffin (CEO of Atlas World Group), JJ Mohr, Natalie Hedde and Neil Fortwendel.

Schedule For Series Against Normal at Bosse Field Adjusted
The Evansville Otters and Normal Cornbelters will finish the suspended game from July 20 in Normal, Ill. on Tuesday, Aug. 22, at Bosse Field.
However, the start time of resumption has been moved up one hour to 4:35 p.m. The regularly scheduled game between the Cornbelters and Otters will take place approximately 30 minutes after the conclusion.
Evansville isn’t scheduled to play again in Normal, Ill. during the regular season.
Fans with tickets to Law Enforcement Appreciation Night on Aug. 22 are encouraged to come early for the conclusion of the suspended game.
The game will resume in the top of the second inning with Normal leading 3-0.
Evansville returns home to Bosse Field Friday when the team partners with the city’s “E is for Everyone†campaign. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m. and gates will open an hour before.

University of Evansville Announces Berger Awards for 2017
Three University of Evansville professors were honored today – August 15 – with the Sadelle and Sydney Berger Awards for 2017. The awards were presented by Charlie Berger during UE’s Fall Conference. Professor of archaeology Alan Kaiser received the Berger Award for Scholarly Activity, while associate professor of biology Joyce Stamm and associate professor of mathematics Adam Salminen received the Berger Award for Service.
Kaiser teaches courses in Roman and Etruscan archaeology, Roman history and the Latin language. He has conducted training excavations in connection with the archaeological field techniques course. Currently he is director of the University’s Tin City Project, an exploration through aerial photography, excavation and oral interviews of World War II veteran-student campus housing. He has conducted fieldwork in Spain, Italy, Greece, England, and on the Caribbean island of Nevis, as well as in the United States. Kaiser’s published works include scholarly and popular articles as well as three books.
Stamm and Salminen worked together to secure a five-year, $610,600 grant through the National Science Foundation’s Scholarships in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics program. The largest faculty grant in the University’s history, it funds UE science and math scholarships and provides funds for support services for science and mathematics majors at UE.
In addition, Stamm has been involved in many faculty committees and several University service activities. She is a past chair of the Faculty Senate and has been a member of the Faculty Senate Fiscal Affairs Committee. After the 2017-18 academic year, she will conclude four years on the Senate Executive Committee.
Salminen also serves on many University committees, including the Faculty Athletics Committee and the Mathematics Faculty Search Committee. He also served on the Dean of Arts and Science Search Committee. Currently, he is chair of the Mathematics Department Assessment Committee. Salminen is the UE Math Club faculty advisor and has judged papers for UE’s 2010 and 2011 MESCON events.
