Channel 44 News: Tri-State DACA “Dreamers” Express Fears And Concerns

Tri-State DACA “Dreamers” Express Fears And Concerns

The decision to rescind DACA could have a major impact on people who have been living in the United States since they were young children. The Trump Administration announced Tuesday it will begin to roll back an Obama Era program known as DACA or “Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals.”

The program was announced in 2012 — and provides protections to immigrant children brought to the U.S. If there is any good news for those affected it’s that the decision was made with a six month window for Congress to act. President Trump tweeted to Congress “Get ready to do your job – DACA,” putting the decision in the hands of elected officials to either legislate or let DACA go to the wayside.

An estimated 800,000 people have benefited from DACA some who live in communities in the tri-state. Both Erick Barrera and Jazmin Solano are protected under the program. The two have been in the U.S. since the respective ages of four and seven, America is all they know.

Barrera says his initial reaction to the White House announcement was tears as he thought of the future of his family. Like thousands of dreamers, their fears are being realized with this announcement.

Barrera and Solano both are studying at Ivy tech Community College in Evansville. Solano is 22 and doesn’t even know if she will be able to use her degree. She hopes speaking out will make people more aware of just how many people this decision will affect, “We need all of your support even if it’s something as simple as tweeting “Defend Daca” or writing a letter to your congressman. Anything is going to help us.”

Two Doctors Battle for the Soul of the Republican Party In Indiana

2

Jasper Doctor To Oppose Incumbent Congressman Larry Bucshon

Dr. Richard Moss, a head and neck cancer surgeon, will formally announce his bid to oppose incumbent Congressman Larry Bucshon in the Republican primary on May 8, 2018.

The announcement will be held at the Four Freedoms Monument on September 9 as part of the Salute to Freedom rally in Evansville, Indiana.

Dr. Moss, who ran against Bucshon in 2016, has expressed concern about the future of the Republican party. “We will not save the Republic with two liberal parties. We cannot have a hard left Socialist-Democrat Party and a big government, big spending, liberal-progressive, Republican Party. The trajectory is all to the left: more spending, more debt, more government, more socialism, more tyranny. We cannot accept a Republican party that campaigns one way and votes another, makes promises it has no intention of keeping, that goes to Washington, cuts deals with Democrats and corrupt lobbyists, grows government, and bankrupts our children.”

Moss then focuses his attention on Bucshon directly. “Larry Bucshon has become a typical DC politician. He has taken pages from Richard Lugar’s and Evan Bayh’s playbooks by moving his family to Washington. He doesn’t even live in the community he represents. Instead, he hangs around Washington insiders and lobbyists and has forgotten what the voters in Indiana sent him to do. His funding is now at 98% from PACs and large donors. Like every Establishment Republican, Larry campaigns like a conservative but votes like a liberal. He has just a 43% Conservative Review rating. He votes more often with Nancy Pelosi than he does with the Freedom Caucus. He is not helping Donald Trump drain the swamp. He is part of the swamp. He always does as he is told, first by John Boehner and now by Paul Ryan.”

“Indiana needs a representative who will put Hoosiers first, not Washington insiders, not lobbyists, special interests, or big donors.”

Some of his harshest criticism for Bucshon comes from his vote on the House version to replace Obamacare. “He supported the phony House Obamacare bill! Obamacare 2.0. It doubles down on Obamacare, maintaining its basic structure, all but ensuring its death spiral and collapse, only this time with Republican fingerprints all over it. As a doctor, Bucshon should know better.”

Dr. Moss will make his announcement on Saturday, September 9, 2017, at the Salute To Freedom Rally, Four Freedoms Monument, 267 South East Riverside Drive, Evansville, Indiana, 10AM-1PM.

Dr. Richard Moss is a board certified specialist in Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery (Ear Nose and Throat) and was a candidate for Congress in 2016. He earned his undergraduate degree in Biology at Indiana University, and completed his Doctor of Medicine degree at the Indiana University School of Medicine.  Moss has been in private practice since 1991, with offices in Jasper and Washington Indiana. He is married with four children.

IU Places Six Swimmers, Three Coaches on USA Swimming National Team

0

Six Indiana University swimmers along with three Hoosier coaches were named to the 2017-18 USA Swimming National Team last week.

Current IU swimmers Ian Finnerty, Lilly King and Blake Pieroni were named to the team, along with alum Cody Miller and IU postgrads Zane Grothe and Amanda Kendall. IU head coach Ray Looze, associate head coach Mike Westphal and associate head sprint coach Coley Stickels were named Team USA coaches.

“Placing six swimmers and three coaches on the 2017 US National team is another step forward for the men’s and women’s swimming teams’ preparations for Tokyo 2020,” Looze remarked. “The performances at the World Championships in Budapest and the World University Games in Taipei have allowed our swimmers to gain valuable international experience which we will apply to our entire program. There is an old say which states, ‘you are who you hang out with’, which means if you’re at IU you will be hanging with Olympians, World record holders, World Champions and some of the best swimmers in the world. We celebrate all these outstanding coaches and swimmers for the fine accomplishment.”

The 2017-18 USA Swimming National Team features the top six athletes in each individual Olympic event from the combined results of the 2017 Phillips 66 National Championships, 2017 FINA World Championships, 2017 World University Games and the 2017 U.S. Open.
