Rickey gives USI a 2-1 OT win
SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – University of Southern Indiana sophomore midfielder Sean Rickey (Columbia, Illinois) scored with 17 seconds left in overtime to lift the Screaming Eagles to a 2-1 victory over the University of Illinois Springfield Sunday afternoon in Springfield, Illinois. The Eagles rise to 4-5-0 overall and 2-5-0 in the GLVC, while Illinois Springfield sees its record go to 5-4-1 overall and 5-2-1 in the league.
Rickey deposited the game-winning goal at 99:40 from five yards out as the Prairie Stars tried to clear the ball. The goal was Rickey’s team-high fifth of the season.
USI jumped out in front early, 1-0, when sophomore forward Eric Ramirez (Vincennes, Indiana) put the Eagles on top at 2:22. Ramirez, who posted his second goal of the year, scored on a breakaway up the middle on a through-ball by senior midfielder Cesar Alba(Hanover Park, Illinois).
In the second half, the Prairie Stars waited until 88:47 to get the equalizer and knot the match at 1-1. That would set the stage for Rickey and the Eagles in overtime.
Between the posts, senior goalkeeper Adam Zehme (Orland Park, Illinois) marked his fourth win over the year. Zehme allowed one goal, while facing 15 shots and making eight saves.
The Eagles return to the friendly surroundings of Strassweg Field Friday evening when they host Quincy University for a 7:30 p.m. kickoff and start a two-match homestand. USI concludes the upcoming homestand next Sunday (October 8) against Truman State University.

Sentence affirmed for man who killed exchange students in drunk driving crash
Olivia Covington for www.theindianalawyer.com
A man convicted of killing three foreign exchange students in a violent car crash while driving drunk won’t have his 38 ½-year sentence after the Indiana Court of Appeals determined he failed to prove his sentence was inappropriate.
In Deangelo Evans v. State of Indiana, 27A02-1704-CR-826, seven Manchester University students were returning from a visit with friends at Ball State University in February 2016 when one of the tires on their van blew out. The driver moved the van to the left shoulder and turned on the hazard lights, and the students exited the van and stood in a median to wait while the tire was being change.
About 30 minutes later, other drivers observed a man later identified as Deangelo Evans driving erratically along I-69 in Delaware and Grant Counties, nearly striking two vehicles and weaving across the road. Two motorists called police to report Evans’ driving, but before they could respond he drove off the interstate and into the median were the students were standing, killing three of them. The victims – Kirubel Hailu, Brook Dagnew and Nerad Mangai – were exchange students from Africa.
Evans, who was initially unaware of the accident, did not stop until further down the road, when he felt wind blowing through his broke windshield. When police interviewed him later that afternoon, Evans admitted to drinking at a party, smoking marijuana and taking alprazolam before the accident. However, he did not remember the accident itself and attempted to shift the blame toward the students because he did not understand why they were on the left side of the road. Lab tests later showed his blood alcohol content was 0.119.
Evans then pleaded guilty to three counts of Level 4 felony operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated causing death, one count of Level 6 felony operating a vehicle while intoxicated causing serious bodily injury and one count of Level 6 felony criminal recklessness. His sentencing hearing highlighted an extensive criminal history that included various felony drug charges and the fact that he was violating the conditions of his Illinois parole by being present in Indiana without permission at the time of the accident. As a result, he was sentenced to an aggregate of 38 ½ years out of a maximum possible sentence of 41 years.
On appeal, Evans argued that sentence was inappropriate, but the Indiana Court of Appeals affirmed in a Friday opinion. Judge Rudolph Pyle, writing for the appellate court, pointed to Evans’ behavior immediately before and after the accident as evidence of the appropriateness of the sentence, noting the accident was so bad it actually dismembered one of the victims, yet Evans tried to shift the blame to the students for parking on the left side of the road.
Further, Pyle wrote the evidence shows Evans had never maintained legitimate employment, but rather has stolen and gambled to make money and has used that money to purchase drugs. Those facts, couple with his extensive drug history and parole violations, make Evans’ sentence appropriate, the judge wrote.

Intoxicated Driver in Jail after a Pair of Early Morning Road Rage Incidents
- An Evansville man is in jail on charges of drunk driving after a pair of road rage incidents resulted in one driver being assaulted and another driver having their vehicle struck and then pushed toward a moving train.
Just before 1:00 AM on Saturday, September 30, 2017 a 17-year-old female called 911 to report that she had been assaulted by a motorist. The victim had been driving in the 6300 block of Kratzville Road when a red Dodge Caravan backed out of a driveway and blocked the roadway. When the victim yelled at the motorist, he exited his vehicle and then struck her in the head with his hand before driving away.
A few minutes later, the Sheriff’s Office responded to the area of N. Saint Joseph Ave and Allens Lane upon receiving a report that the same vehicle involved in the assualt on Kratzville Road had struck a vehicle on Allens Lane. The victim reported that he had been stopped in the westbound lane of Allens Lane for moving training when a red Dodge Caravan struck him from behind. The victim reported that the driver attempted to push his vehicle into the train. The victim explained that the motorist then got out of his vehicle and yelled at him before fleeing the scene. The victim followed the van to the intersection of Freedom Drive and Allens Lane, where he observed the driver exit his vehicle and urinate in the middle of the intersection.
A responding sheriff’s deputy located the red van traveling west on Allens Lane and stopped the vehicle. The vehicle had heavy front end damage and was driving on two flat tires. The driver, who was later identified as Mr. Rocky Phillip Plassmeyer, appeared highly intoxicated. After failing all the standardized field sobriety test offered to him, Mr. Plassmeyer was transported to the jail for a breath test. Mr. Plassmeyer’s breath alcohol concentration was .176 g/210L, which is more than double the legal limit of .080.
A check of Mr. Plassmeyer’s criminal history revealed that he was on probation after a conviction for Operating a Motor Vehicle While Intoxicated in March of 2017. Mr. Plassmeyer was lodged in the Vanderburgh County Jail on $20,000 bond.
