We hope that today’s “READERS FORUMâ€Â will provoke honest and open dialogue concerning issues that we, as responsible citizens of this community, need to address in a rational and responsible way?Â
IS IT TRUEÂ it was reported last week that four (4) significant downtown properties owned and operated by the Kunkel Group have been placed into receivership? …receivership is often a precursor to bankruptcy filings by corporate entities but is not a guarantee that bankruptcy is imminent?…that going into receivership is absolutely an indicator of financial distress but many companies do succeed in emerging from such situations and we sincerely hope that the Kunkel Group finds a way to rectify whatever situation caused these four downtown properties to be placed into receivership?
IS IT TRUE there are other properties in downtown Evansville that are owned and operated by the Kunkel Group or holding companies that the Kunkel Group is a partner in?…one of those buildings is the infamous McCurdy Hotel that has yet to recover from the political tampering that was started by former Mayor Jonathan Weinzapfel in the summer of 2008 with the march of the elderly away from the McCurdy?…the embattled old building has been victimized by the City of Evansville time and time again from Weinzapfel and his Evansville Redevelopment Commission overpaying for a parking lot and handing out a $900,000 cash incentive to a political buddy from Indianapolis that was squandered?…the latest distress of the historic structure is the very public million dollars plus water bill that literally makes this building incapable of earning any profits?… the City of Evansville has put the final nail in the McCurdy’s coffin but may hold the key to resurrecting the old girl by amending their policy with respect to geothermal systems?…in the absence of a change in public policy, the McCurdy may be the next Kunkel property to be placed into receivership or worse?
IS IT TRUE that the Kunkel Group also owns or manages several other marquee properties in downtown Evansville starting with the old Welborn Clinic where Weinzapfel and friends directed the once McCurdy’s elderly to march?… Kunkel also has the old Whirlpool building on the north side where Mayor Winnecke and his newly appointed administration mugged for the cameras in golden hard hats to celebrate the idiotic deal they made with Earthcare Energy LLC that successfully shook down the inept City of Evansville for $200,000 when they failed to even have the presence of mind to check on the false claim that Earthcare Energy LLC had a patent on an unproven technology? …the City of Evansville has been joined at the hip with several developers and investors for over a decade?  …that two administrations has participated in helping developers and investors with the downtown loft loan program, $50,000 facade grants and to collecting abandoned properties in the downtown, Haynie’s Corner and North Main street areas?…the reality is that the Kunkel Group has done more to revitalize downtown Evansville than all of these politicians combined and it is sad to see them fall into financial challenges?
IS IT TRUE that two terms Mayor Lloyd Winnecke is seeking to become three terms Mayor Lloyd Winnecke and at this time no candidate of substance on the Democrat side has come forward to challenge him?…on again off again Democrat City Councilman Jonathan Weaver  is currently in off again mode?…no other credible candidate has stepped up to seek the job and with Winnecke sitting on over $500,000 the odds are long to start?…it is even possible that Winnecke could win in a landslide that has not been seen since 2007 when Weinzapfel beat a finanically flawed Republican candidate by an 85 -15 margin?…it is possible that Evansville has gone from a solid blue city to a solid red one in a period of only 12 years?…this flip in sentiment can all be traced to the Democrat primary of 2011 when the late great Rick Davis injected accountability into the old boy network that Mayor Weinzapfel had become the poster child for?…this is a most unlikely thing but here we are, a blue-collar town that loves red?
IS IT TRUE recently Mayor Winnecke was “TWEETING” that the North Main street corridor is on the move? Â …he said that a former resident of the Jacobsville area is going to locate a new business there? Â …he also said a “Cake Making” business is moving down the street to a bigger location? …we hope that these businesses are self-sustaining and will not be depending on any public subsidies?
IS IT TRUE  we wonder why the Mayor didn’t mention in his recent “TWEET” that since the $18 million dollars tax-funded North Main Street corridor project was completed the IGA grocery store abruptly closed an now is a big eyesore to the North Main street corridor? …he also forgot to say that the Echo Housing sponsored and Evansville DMD financially funded “Jacobsville Join In” group abruptly closed without giving any explanation to City Council members or citizens of that area? …we also wonder why the Mayor didn’t say in his “TWEET” that he is extremely disappointed that the expensive bike lanes on the North Main street corridor are rarely used by biking enthusiasts?
IS IT TRUE that former Evansville Icemen Hockey team over a three year period of time paid the Ford Center the following amount of base rent for 36 home games (a range of rent per game of $10,926 to $11,479)?  …from 2015-2016 they paid $413,244 ?  …from 2014-2015 they paid $403,164?  …from 2013-2014 they paid $393,336?Â
IS IT TRUE that the former Evansville Icemen Hockey team paid the Ford Center approximately $49,968 a year to use audio-video equipment and paid the operating camera crews for 36 home games over a five year period?
IS IT TRUE that the former Evansville Icemen Hockey Team paid the Ford Center a $2.00 Facility Fee for each ticket sold ( less a credit for season and group tickets sold) over the last three years for the 36 home games they played at the Ford Center?  …from 2015-2016 they paid Venueworks $119,603?  …from 2014-2015 they paid Venueworks $180,320?  ...2013-2014 they paid Venueworks $206,190? IS IT TRUE that the total  expenses incurred by the former Evansville Icemen paid to the Ford Center for per game lease, audio-video services and $2.00 Facility Fee  for the last three (3) years were: 2015-2016 was $582,815, 2014-2015 was $633,412 and during 2013-2014 was $649,455 this amount was among the highest paid expenses for these categories in the 28 team ECHL League?
IS IT TRUE we look forward to the owners of the Evansville Thunderbolts, the officials at DMD, Evansville Redevelopment Commission and the Vanderburgh County Building Authority to provide members of the local media with similar financial information concerning the Thunderbolts since their inception?

NATIONAL CLIMATE ASSESSMENT A POLITICAL HOT POTATO
It’s quite possible that climate change will eventually have a greater negative impact on businesses large and small than the administration’s ill-conceived tariffs on imports, and its “America First†trade policies.
During the administration’s first two years, the wholesale elimination of regulations enacted by the Environmental Protection Agency and other government institutions have removed safeguards meant to keep Americans healthy and secure. The economic health of American workers – not their employers – is often cited as the motivating factor behind these changes.
To varying degrees, all administrations pander to those whose financial support helped put and keep them in office. The Trump administration is no different. Yet fixes that favor short-term corporate interests over those of ordinary Americans who voted for the president will inevitably yield economic consequences that affect the bottom-line and well-being of us all.
Global warming and the environment need not be a political hot potato. As the late President Bush told an audience thirty years ago, “Those who think we’re powerless to do anything about the greenhouse effect are forgetting about the White House effect.†In the wake of the latest National Climate Assessment, it is in everyone’s interests for the current occupant of that house to retake his temperature and reconsider his position on climate change.

SPRINGFIELD, Va., Dec. 5, 2018 — President Trump has officially moved to allow E15 (15 percent ethanol) gasoline sales year-round – a fuel prohibited for use in recreational boats and a decision that recreational boating groups say will needlessly put 142 million American boaters at risk. Protecting Boaters at the Gas Pump is a new website with a series of photos of gas station pumps in Illinois, Indiana, and Wisconsin that clearly shows the challenges boaters face with poor ethanol warning labels at the pump, resulting in a greater risk of fueling.
The effort is from the National Marine Manufacturers Association’s (NMMA), which was recently shared in “Boating United†campaign that urges recreational boat owners to tweet their members of Congress to stop the expansion of the government-mandated fuel. Boat Owners Association of The United States (BoatUS) supports the effort and is urging recreational boaters to share the website with friends:
“The ethanol industry doesn’t want you to see these photos of gas pumps,†said BoatUS Manager of Government Affairs David Kennedy. “The confusion presented to consumers at the pump today is real. Putting the wrong fuel in your boat will likely void your engine’s warranty. We applaud NMMA for clearly showing the fueling problem.â€
E15 is currently banned for sale in many states by the Environmental Protection Agency during summer months over concerns that it contributes to smog on hot days. The push for more ethanol into the nation’s fuel supply is a result of the Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS). When it was passed in 2005, RFS assumed that America’s use of gasoline would continue to grow. Since then, however, gasoline usage has not increased as forecast, which today forces more ethanol into each gallon of gas.
BoatUS has long had concerns over potential consumer fueling with E15. Most recreational boaters refuel their vessels at roadside gas stations where pump-labeling requirements are minimal with just a small E15 orange warning label. The advocacy, services and safety group for recreational boaters is a member of Smarter Fuel Future, a coalition that aims to reform the RFS.

Women employees of Shane’s uniform department are pictured busily sewing uniforms in the company’s huge plant in 1946. Located on Maryland Street at Buchanan Road, Shane Manufacturing Company, Inc., was founded by Chicago native Norman Shane, Sr., in 1931.
It specialized in textile products, and a uniform division was formed five years later. After the Second World War, Shane supplied washable work garments to Sears, Roebuck & Company and other retailers around the country and overseas.
By the late 1960s, the firm employed nearly a thousand people in four Evansville plants and had offices in New York, Chicago, and other large cities. After Norman Shane’s death in 1974, his company was sold to a textile firm in Florida.

The University held its two fall commencement ceremonies Saturday in the Physical Activities Center. One ceremony for the College of Nursing and Health Professions and Pott College of Science, Engineering, and Education, and another for the College of Liberal Arts and Romain College of Business.
While students were excited to leave college and move to the next chapter of their life some were still having a hard time believing their college experience was over.
“Very excited, yeah definitely. It was a great ceremony, they did a great job.
“It was beautiful. I don’t think it’s hit me yet. has it hit you? Nope, no…†says USI graduates Samantha Hoy Haas, and Mackenzie Cross.
In all, 666 students participated in the two ceremonies with 116 of those students graduating with academic honors.

Kentucky Downs is currently owned by a group led by Nashville, Tenn., businessman Ray Reid and former Lone Star Park President Corey Johnsen, who purchased the facility in 2007.
Winchell — who followed his famous father, Verne, into the Thoroughbred racing and breeding world — has maintained his family’s significant presence in the industry for several years. In addition to racing Tapit, whom Verne Winchell purchased as a yearling, Ron Winchell and his mother, Joan, have also raced several outstanding horses throughout the years, namely the reigning Horse of the Year Gun Runner and 2014 Kentucky Oaks winner Untapable.
In addition to his vast holdings in the Thoroughbred industry, Winchell also owns and operates a chain of slot parlors in Las Vegas, where he currently resides most of the year with his family. A majority of his “gaming taverns†are known as “Jackpot Joanie’s,†named for Ron Winchell’s mother.
According to a story written by Jay Privman for “The Daily Racing Form,â€Â and published on Oct. 30, 2017, Winchell owns 18 facilities in Nevada, which he described to DRF as “small, local places.â€
Reached Sunday, David Fiske, racing manager for Winchell, said that “at this time I can neither confirm or deny.”

COA remands, finding man didn’t knowingly possess cocaine

A man convicted on a variety of counts of drug possession will be resentenced after the Indiana Court of Appeals agreed with the state that there was insufficient evidence to convict him of possessing cocaine.
Jacob Lee Silvers was arrested after he fled the scene where his car had pulled over after police had received a tip. He was found guilty as charged of Count 1, Level 6 felony possession of cocaine, for the heroin that lab tests found also contained cocaine; Count 2, Class A misdemeanor resisting law enforcement; Count 3, Class B misdemeanor possession of marijuana; Count 4, Class B misdemeanor visiting a common nuisance; Count 5, Class C misdemeanor possession of paraphernalia, and; Count 6, Level 6 felony possession of a narcotic drug, heroin.
Silvers was sentenced to 912 days for Count 1, 365 days for Count 2 and 180 days for Count 3, to be served consecutively, for an aggregate term of just under four years in prison. He was also sentenced on the other charges to be served concurrently.
But the Indiana Court of Appeals on Friday threw out Silvers’ conviction on Count 1, cocaine possession, because the state agreed with his argument that Silvers could not have known he possessed cocaine that was found in a lab test in what he believed was heroin.
“The State concedes that the evidence does not support this conviction because there is no evidence that Silvers knew the heroin also contained cocaine,†Chief Judge Nancy Vaidik wrote for the panel in Jacob Lee Silvers v. State of Indiana, 18A-CR-1126. “The State asks us to remand this case to the trial court for resentencing on the five remaining counts. … Silvers does not ask for a different remedy. We therefore remand this case to the trial court for resentencing.â€
