Sullivan Invites Non-Traditional Female Students To Apply For “The POWER Scholarship”

0

State Rep. Holli Sullivan (R-Evansville) encourages non-traditional female students to apply for the POWER Caucus Scholarship to further their education and career aspirations.

Women who are returning to school after a hiatus, changing careers, and seeking advancement in their careers or work lives, as well as stay-at-home moms entering the workplace who are in need of additional education and training, can earn a scholarship of $750 to put toward their education.

“Through this scholarship, non-traditional female students can receive financial help as they further their education,” Sullivan said. “Obtaining higher education credentials can open doors and we want hard-working Hoosiers to have opportunities to meet their career goals and aspirations, regardless of their age, family structure or previous work experience.”

Sullivan said there will be 18 scholarships awarded – two per congressional district. Scholarships are given to women who are residents of the state of Indiana and who are pursuing their educational endeavors in the state.

The primary selection criteria to be used by the committee selecting the scholarship winners will be financial need, personal vision, service to the community and future plans.

Scholarships will be awarded at a ceremony in February. To fill out an application, go to www.inpowercaucus.org/powerscholarship/. The application deadline is October 1.

Eagles Battle For First-Day Split At Warrior Invitational

DETROIT – The University of Southern Indiana volleyball team opened the Warrior Invitational with a day-one split, defeating Malone University, 3-1 (20-25, 26-24, 27-25, 25-21), after dropping a three-setter to the University of Missouri-St. Louis (23-25, 22-25, 14-25).

The Screaming Eagles (2-3) were led offensively against UMSL by freshman right-side hitter Katherine Koch (Belleville, Illinois) as she posted 10 kills on a .320 hitting clip. Friday’s opening-match performance is the second time in just four collegiate outings that Koch reached double-digits in kills.

Senior outside hitter Lindsey Stose (Elkhart, Indiana) and freshman outside hitter Leah Anderson (Bloomington, Illinois) each posted 14 kills against Malone; setting a new career-high for Stose.

Junior setter Casey Cepicky picked up her 20th career double-double against UMSL on her way to 53 assists and 17 digs on the first day of the Warrior Invitational.

Senior middle hitter Elexis Coleman turned in a solid performance against Malone, posting 10 kills, seven digs, and a career-high-tying seven blocks.

USI Volleyball returns to the campus of Wayne State University Saturday to battle Ursuline College and the host Warriors.

Game 1: Missouri-St. Louis 3, USI 0

USI posted runs of 7-1, 4-1 and 4-0 in the first frame against the Tritons before UMSL rattled off an 8-1 rally to snag the first set, 25-23.

The Eagles held the largest lead in the frame at 11-5, thanks to a pair of service aces and a kill from Anderson. Koch, Stose and Coleman each contributed three kills.

USI and UMSL traded blows again in the second set, with the Tritons claiming it, 25-22.

The two squads combined for nine tied-scores and six lead changes while neither team posted more than four consecutive points in the set. Koch did most of her damage in this set, posting five kills on eight clean attempts.

Cepicky notched her 20th-career double-double after posting five digs in each of the first two sets while amassing 16 of her eventual 22 assists.

USI dropped the match as it allowed a seven-point set-clinching run by the Tritons to capture the third set, 25-14. The Eagles also opened the set allowing an 8-1 run from UMSL.

Game 2: USI 3, Malone 1

The Eagles ceded Malone’s one set in the first frame, 20-25, after allowing an 8-0 run that led to a 14-8 Pioneer lead. Koch tallied four of her six kills in the match in the first set.

USI needed extra points in both the second and third sets, 26-24 and 27-25, respectively. The Eagles faced set-point at 21-24 before shelling out a 5-0 run to close the second; a 5-1 run for USI closed the third.

Stose and Anderson each struck for five kills in the third set, giving them 11 each through three. Senior libero Mikaila Humphrey (Floyd Knobs, Indiana) crossed the double-digit threshold in digs with 11 of her 15 for the match; Humphrey’s most since the 2017 campaign.

The fourth set finished 25-21, in favor of the Eagles, again by way of a set-clinching run, this time an 8-1 stretch. Anderson and Coleman teamed up for three of the final four kills and two blocks in the closing run.

Senator Braun Applauds President Trump’s EPA, Army For Finalizing Repeal of WOTUS

0
WASHINGTON – Today, President Donald Trump’s Environmental Protection Agency and the Department of Army will announce they have finalized a rule to repeal former President Obama’s “Waters of the United States” (WOTUS) rule, thereby providing much-needed certainty for farmers and property owners.

While this repeals the previous administration’s definition of WOTUS, Senator Mike Braun and Senator Joni Ernst have introduced legislation that would put a new definition in statute to provide permanent certainty so that future administrations cannot undo this historic decision from President Trump’s EPA.

“As a member of the Ag community, I know President Trump and EPA Administrator Andrew Wheeler are keeping their promise to repeal the Waters of the United States (WOTUS) rule that gave unelected bureaucrats the power to regulate lakes, streams, ponds and ditches,” said Senator Mike Braun. “To compliment Trump’s deregulatory agenda, I have offered legislation that puts their work and a new definition into law so that no future administrations can treat our farmers like the previous administration did.”

BACKGROUND

EPA, Army finalize repeal of controversial ‘Waters of the U.S.’ rules. “Today, EPA and the Department of the Army will finalize a rule to repeal the previous administration’s overreach in the federal regulation of waters and wetlands. This action officially ends an egregious power grab and sets the stage for a new rule that will provide much-needed regulatory certainty for farmers, home builders, and property owners nationwide. … In 2015, the Obama administration put forward a WOTUS definition that expanded Washington’s influence over the landscape, including categorical jurisdiction over ephemeral tributaries and potential jurisdiction over isolated wetlands and ponds three-quarters of a mile from a remote tributary. The definition was so far-reaching that they needed to clarify in regulatory text that puddles were excluded.  The 2015 rule meant that more businesses and landowners across the U.S. would need to obtain a federal permit to exercise control over their own property, a process that can cost tens of thousands of dollars and take months or even years to complete.” (EPA Administrator Andrew Wheeler, Des Moines Register, 09/12/19)

A new WOTUS definition will provide certainty for hardworking Americans.  “Today’s action is ‘Step 1’ of our response to the president’s executive order. Step 1 repeals the 2015 rule and recodifies the longstanding and familiar regulatory text that existed previously. It also sets the stage for ‘Step 2’ – our new proposed ‘waters of the United States’ definition. … Today’s action fulfills a key promise of the president and lays the groundwork for his ultimate objective – a new WOTUS definition that provides hardworking Americans the regulatory certainty they need to invest in, develop, and build new projects that improve lives and the environment.” (EPA Administrator Andrew Wheeler, Des Moines Register, 09/12/19)

Senator Braun’s the Define WOTUS Act codifies a definition of “Waters of the United States.”  “If passed, the bill would reassert Congressional responsibility to define this important term.  The definition in the Define WOTUS Act also makes substantial improvements over various administrative attempts to define the term by clearly outlining what is, and is not, a federally regulated waterway.”  (Press Release, 07/31/19)

How is the Define WOTUS Act different from the EPA Rule?  “Like EPA’s rule, the Define WOTUS Act provides much greater certainty to American farmers, workers, businesses and landowners. It gives landowners clear guidelines by which they can go out on their land and clearly determine what is regulated by the EPA and what is not. Because Congress is not restricted various rulemaking statutes, the Define WOTUS Act provides a clearer definition with more obvious safeguards to protect against a runaway bureaucracy.  EPA’s efforts are an outgrowth of Congressional inaction on this issue. Had Congress acted appropriately nearly 40 years ago, then we would not have had these decades of litigation and conflicting rulemakings. We believe that Congress should act here and The Define WOTUS Act is our preferred definition.” (Press Release, 07/31/19)

Why is the Define WOTUS Act necessary now?  “It is important for Congress to get on the record on this issue.  Further, while the Obama-era rule is stayed in Indiana, I frequently hear from farmers who are still seeing enforcement officers implementing the Obama rule. This is unacceptable, and causing quite a bit of consternation in the farm community. I have been speaking to EPA and Indiana about this, but I also want to introduce legislation to make Congress’s position clear about what is and is not under federal jurisdiction.” (Press Release, 07/31/19)

Yesteryear By Pat Sides-Fulton Avenue Near The Lloyd Expressway

Fulton Avenue near the Lloyd Expressway

Views of Evansville change over the years, sometimes so gradually that residents don’t immediately notice. This photograph was taken in the spring of 1985 when the old L & N railroad depot was being demolished in the 300 blocks of South Fulton Avenue.

The view looks north toward the intersection where the Lloyd Expressway overpass is now. The tall building in the distance (at left) is the Sterling Brewing Company, which was called Fulton Avenue Brewery when it was built in 1880; it was razed in 1998. With the exception of the small structure that the man is leaning against, all of the buildings in the picture are now gone.

Age took some of the buildings, but the expressway’s construction also necessitated the removal of others.
