YESTERYEAR: Smith and Butterfield, Inc.

YESTERYEAR by PAT SIDES

Most people who still remember the office and furniture supply store Smith and Butterfield recall its downtown location at 305 Main Street. This image, dated ca. 1960, shows another space it occupied in the old wholesale district on NW First Street, which was populated by several huge commercial and industrial buildings that had disappeared by the late 1960s.

On April 21, 1966, the Evansville Chamber of Commerce hosted a breakfast at the McCurdy Hotel marking Smith and Butterfield’s founding in 1866, which was followed by a ribbon-cutting ceremony at its Main Street store. The Butterfield family sold the business to a West Virginia company in 1996. Although it retained its original name and continues to operate in Evansville, Smith and Butterfield has not had a downtown presence since then.

University of Southern Indiana Women’s Track & Field produced two brand new NCAA II provisional qualifiers and a few other notable performances at the Washburn Ichabod Invite Saturday.

Sophomore Mckenna Cavanaugh picked up right where she left off after notching a provisional mark in the mile at the Don DeNoon Invite she had similar success last evening. Cavanaugh finished runner up in the 3000 meters pacing her way to nine minutes, 37.78 seconds which was nearly 20 seconds faster than the NCAA II provisional qualifying standard of 9:57.72. Also, Cavanaugh’s 3000m time is unofficially 9th fastest in the nation currently and second in the Great Lakes Valley Conference only behind University of Indianapolis’ Lauren Bailey.

Senior Jennifer Comastri also went back-to-back on NCAA II provisional qualifiers. Last week, Comastri got her provisional mark in the 3000m but this go around it was the 5000m with a speedy time of 16:59.54. Comastri’s 5000m time awarded her third place in the race and is currently marked down as the seventh fastest in the nation.

The Screaming Eagles had three other runners turn in top-12 performances. Freshman Allison Morphew who ran with Cavanaugh was the other Eagle who crossed the line with a time of 10:09.44 granting her an 11th place finish.

Sophomore Hadley Fisher was the next Eagle pacing behind Comastri in the 5000m as she grabbed the sixth spot in 17:51.62. Last, sophomore Kaylee Lane dashed for the line in 59.30 to hold on for sixth place in the 400m.

Right Jab And Middle Jab And Left Jab” February 15, 2021

Right Jab And Middle Jab And Left Jab” was created because we have a couple of commenters that post on a daily basis either in our “IS IT TRUE” or “Readers Forum” columns concerning local, state, national, or international issues

The majority of our “IS IT TRUE” columns are about local or state issues, so we have decided to give our more opinionated readers exclusive access to our newly created “LEFT JAB and Middle Jab and RIGHT JAB”  column. They now have this post to exclusively discuss local, state, national, or world issues that they feel passionate about.

We shall be posting the “LEFT JAB” AND “MIDDLE JAB” AND “RIGHT JAB” 7 days a week.  Oh, “LEFT JAB” is a liberal view, “MIDDLE JAB” is the libertarian view and the “RIGHT JAB is representative of the more conservative views. Also, any reader who would like to react to the written comments in this column is free to do so.

University of Southern Indiana Men’s Track & Field turned out an NCAA II provisional qualifier and a few other noteworthy performances at the Washburn Ichabod Invite Saturday.

Junior Titus Winders was the one who stole the show for the men as he found himself in a familiar position, ahead of most of the competition on Saturday in the 3000 meters. Winders clocked in at eight minutes, 15.87 seconds as he took fifth in the race, dipping underneath the NCAA II provisional qualifying standard of 8:22.15. Winders’ 3000m time, unofficially, has him sitting at 29th on the nation’s performance list.

There were three other top-15 performances for the men on Saturday. Freshman Silas Winders was the other Screaming Eagle in the 3000m to cross the line in 13th place and a time of 8:32.30.

Both Seniors Gavin Prior (14:50.21) and Wyat Harmon (14:54.12) wound up in the top-10, sixth and eighth place, respectively in the 5000m.

BREAKING NEWS: MAJOR SNOW STORM/BLIZZARD HEADED OUR WAY

0

We wanted to update you on two significant winter weather systems that are slated to impact us this week.  ATTACHED BELOW IS THE LINK OF THE WINTER STORM WARNING-SITUATION REPORT PROVIDED TO US BY THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE LOCATED IN PADUCAH, KENTUCKY.

PAH-SitReport1_02_14_2021_71_18

The first system will arrive tonight and last through Monday night. There will likely be two waves of snow. One that starts tonight and then a second, more heavier wave of snow, on Monday into Monday night. A winter storm warning is in effect from 6pm tonight through 6am Tuesday for the entire area (southeast MO, southern IL, southwest IN and western KY). Snowfall totals of 4-8 inches are forecast with locally higher amounts certainly possible.

After a brief reprieve on Tuesday, another strong weather system impacts the area on Wednesday and lasts through Thursday evening. This system will bring another round of snow to the area. There is a possibility parts of western KY could end up seeing a period of freezing rain/sleet at some point on Thursday as well. There is confidence that we could see multiple inches of snow with this event. Stay tuned to the latest forecasts as updates are inevitable this week.

Cold weather is also going to stay with us for a while. But there is light at the end of the tunnel, with highs above freezing expected area wide by next weekend.

As a reminder, we would certainly appreciate any snowfall reports during these events and especially storm total snowfall reports at the very end of the event. Your reports are very important!

Be safe and stay warm.

Thanks,

Lady Eagles Fall To No. 4 Drury, 93-64

0

University of Southern Indiana Women’s Basketball suffered a 93-64 Great Lakes Valley Conference home loss to No. 4 Drury University Saturday afternoon at Screaming Eagles Arena.

The Screaming Eagles (11-5, 11-5 GLVC) rallied from a nine-point first-quarter deficit to match the Panthers, 24-24, early in the second period, but Drury used a 19-4 run that lasted nearly six minutes to surge out to a commanding 43-28 advantage late in the opening half.

After going into the break facing a 44-31 halftime deficit, USI was able to keep the Panthers within striking range throughout much of the third period. Following a basket by senior guard Ashley Hunter (Flossmoor, Illinois), the Eagles trailed by just 12 (56-44) with less than four minutes to play in the third frame.

The Panthers (13-1, 13-1 GLVC), however, closed the third quarter on a 10-4 run to take a 66-48 lead into the final 10 minutes of the contest. Drury continued its momentum into the final period as it used a 15-2 run to increase its lead to 82-50 with just under five minutes left in the contest.

Hunter led the Eagles with a career-high 20 points and seven rebounds, while senior guard Emma DeHart (Indianapolis, Indiana) added nine points, three assists and three steals. Sophomore guard Soffia Rieckers (Evansville, Indiana) contributed seven points, including five in the opening period.

Junior guard Paige Robinson paced the Panthers with 24 points, while senior forwards Emily Parker and Azia Lynch added 15 and 13 points, respectively. Lynch finished with a game-high eight rebounds for the Panthers, who went 19-of-32 (.594) from the field in the second half and 34-of-64 (.531) for the game. Drury also out-rebounded the Eagles, 40-29, and had a 42-18 scoring advantage inside the paint.

USI shot 57.1 percent (8-14) from the field in the opening period, but a 2-of-10 (.200) shooting performance in the second quarter helped contribute to its halftime deficit. It went just 4-of-16 (.250) from the field and 1-of-9 (.111) from three-point range in the final 14 minutes of the contest.

The Eagles embark on another three-game road trip, beginning Thursday at 5:30 p.m. when they travel to Rolla, Missouri, to take on Missouri University of Science & Technology. USI also visits Maryville University next Saturday before finishing its regular-season road schedule February 22 at McKendree University.
