Jim Jackson

by Pat Sides

James R. (Jim) Jackson was a fixture in Evansville’s theater community for several decades. A native of Missouri, he served in World War II and Korea before moving to California in the 1950s to pursue an acting career. There he met an aspiring actress, and after their marriage, they eventually moved to Evansville, her hometown.

The Jacksons soon became involved in the Evansville Civic Theatre, Newburgh Playhouse, and other theatrical groups. Jim Jackson was directing the theater program at Indiana State University-Evansville in the 1970s when he met Tom Angermeier. Together they organized Repertory People of Evansville, which entertained theater fans on the second floor of the Old Courthouse for many years.

On the occasion of RPE’s 25th anniversary in 1999, Jackson and Angermeier were named Sagamores of the Wabash, the highest honor an Indiana governor can confer.

Redshirt junior hit .733 as Aces ran to seventh-straight win

ST. LOUIS – For the second time this season, University of Evansville redshirt-junior Kenton Crews has been named Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Week, it was announced in a release by the Conference office.

The honor is the second for Crews in the last three weeks, after earning player of the week honors on March 22 following hitting for the cycle against Butler.

Helping Evansville to a weekend sweep of South Dakota State and now seven-straight wins, redshirt junior Kenton Crews continued his tear this season. On the weekend, Crews hit .733 at the plate, starting all four contests in center field, smashing four doubles, a triple, and home run, while generating seven RBI. This season, Crews is hitting a team-best .452, driving in 18 runs, to go along with 12 extra base hits and five stolen bases. Crews is 13th in the nation in batting average, 12th in slugging percentage, 19th in on-base percentage, and seventh in triples.

Evansville returns to action this weekend with its second road MVC series of the season at Bradley on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday at Dozer Park in Peoria, Ill.

ADOPT A PET

0

Wanda is a 7-month-old female white rabbit! She is from, you guessed it, the “Wandavision” group of rabbits. Her adoption fee is $50 and includes her spay & registered microchip. Remember to always check shelters for bunnies instead of buying them from pet stores or farm supply stores – especially around Easter. Rabbits live 8-10+ years and are NOT short-term pets for kids! Wanda’s adoption fee is $50 since the spay is included. Get details at www.vhslifesaver.org/adopt!

University of Southern Indiana Baseball concludes its five-game homestand Tuesday evening by hosting Kentucky Wesleyan College for a 6 p.m. first pitch at the USI Baseball Field. The Screaming Eagles (11-11) are a perfect 4-0 during the homestand, have won seven-straight games, and are looking to get over the .500 mark overall for first time since February.

Following Tuesday’s game with KWC, USI starts a five-game road swing this weekend. The Eagles visit McKendree University April 9-11 for a GLVC four-game series before finishing the road swing at KWC April 13 for an afternoon contest. The schedule at McKendree is set for a 2 p.m. single game Friday; a noon doubleheader Saturday; and a noon single game Sunday.

USI, currently, is fourth in the GLVC Blue Division with its 9-7 conference record, one game behind third-place Lewis University (10-6 GLVC). Junior third baseman Michael Conner leads USI with a .366 batting average and 19 RBIs, while senior outfielder Manny Lopez has belted a team-high four home runs.

During the seven-game winning streak, senior outfielder Bryce Krizan is batting a team-best .526 (10-19) and six stolen bases. Krizan set the USI all-time record for stolen bases (87) versus the University of Missouri-St. Louis Sunday.

Conner and second baseman Ethan Hunter lead the squad with nine RBIs in the last seven games.

The Panthers of KWC (11-3) are on a roll, coming to USI with an eight-game winning streak. KWC also has won 10 of its last 12 games.

The Eagles hold a 98-66 overall series lead over the Panthers, but KWC took both games in the series in 2019, winning 12-7 in Owensboro and 9-4 at the USI Baseball Field. USI has won 11 of the last 14 meetings since 2012.

McKendree (10-10, 3-9 GLVC) will welcome the Eagles to Lebanon, Illinois, looking to break a four-game losing streak after dropping the series to Lewis University last weekend. The Bearcats also have lost four of the last six games leading up to the series.

USI leads the all-time series with McKendree, 30-13, after sweeping the three-game series from the Bearcats in 2019. The Eagles also have       won 12 of the last 13 match-ups with the Bearcats.

Notes
• On the road again.
USI is on the road, once again, a place that has haunted the Eagles all season. USI 0-9 on the road this year, compared to 2-2 at neutral venues and 3-3 at the USI Softball Field.

• Snake bit. USI suffered three straight one-run losses last week to two of the top three teams in the GLVC standings in the University of Indianapolis and McKendree University. USI is 1-6 in games decided by one run and 1-7 in games decided by two runs or less. The Eagles also have lost four of those games in the last at-bat.

• Streaks end. Senior outfielder Alicia Webb (Elberfeld, Indiana) and freshman outfielder Mackenzie Bedrick (Brownsburg, Indiana) each saw impressive streaks come to an end during USI’s 5-4 game-two loss to McKendree on Saturday. Webb saw her career-high 22-game hitting streak come to an end as she went 0-of-4 at the plate, while Bedrick was thrown out trying to steal second for the first time this year, snapping a streak of 15 straight successful stolen base attempts. Webb’s hitting streak, which began with the last four games of the 2020 campaign, is believed to be the longest since Amber Huse hit in a program-record 27 straight games in 1994.

• Last week’s leaders. Sophomore second baseman Rachel Martinez paced the Eagles with a .385 batting average, going a combined 5-of-13 at the plate with a double, home run and two RBI. Bedrick hit .364 (4-14) with an RBI and four stolen bases.

• Season leaders. Bedrick leads the Eagles with a .424 batting average to go along with 18 runs scored and 16 stolen bases in 17 attempts. Webb is hitting .406 with eight doubles a home run and 12 RBI, while Martinez is hitting .339 with two doubles, a triple, two home runs and a team-high 13 RBI. Sophomore shortstop Jordan Rager (Fishers, Indiana) and sophomore first baseman Allie Goodin (Evansville, Indiana) are respectively hitting .328 and .319, with a combined 12 doubles and 18 RBI.

• Scouting the opposition (Jewell). The Cardinals are 8-18 overall and 7-7 in GLVC play heading into Saturday’s games. Senior infielder Allison Rawls is hitting .351 with five doubles, a triple, two home runs and 13 RBI to lead Jewell at the plate.

• Scouting the opposition (Rockhurst). The Hawks, who host McKendree Saturday, head into the weekend with a 14-8 overall record and 7-5 mark in GLVC play after a bye last weekend. The Hawks are getting outstanding pitching from senior Lexie Storrer (10-3, 0.93 ERA), as well as strong hitting from junior utility player Shelby Winkelman (.394 BA, 6 doubles, 1 HR, 14 RBI) and senior utility player Emily Clark (.392 BA, 6 doubles, 5 HR, 13 RBI).

• Up next. Looking forward, USI hosts six straight games at the USI Softball Field, beginning April 17 when the Eagles take on Southwest Baptist University.
