UE Men Drop MVC Road Opener At UNI

Beauchamp Has Career Game

 CEDAR FALLS, Iowa. – Playing close to his hometown of Minnetonka, Minnesota, sophomore Blaise Beauchamp scored a career-high 14 points as the University of Evansville men’s basketball team dropped an 83-61 game to Northern Iowa on Sunday afternoon inside the McLeod Center.

Beauchamp knocked down four triples in the contest for the Purple Aces (4-9, 0-2 MVC).  His scoring mark led the way for UE while Evan Kuhlman was 4-for-6 from the field on his way to 12 points while Jawaun Newton scored 11.  Noah Frederking grabbed seven rebounds while Shamar Givance picked up five assists.  UNI (5-7, 1-1 MVC) was led by an 18-point effort from AJ Green.

The opening five points of the day belonged to the Panthers before a drive-by Antoine Smith Jr. put UE on the board at the 17:26 mark.  Blaise Beauchamp followed that up with back-to-back triples to give Evansville its first lead at 8-5 less than two minutes later.  UNI countered with an 8-0 stretch of their own with AJ Green capping it off with a triple to make it a 13-8 game with 14:16 on the clock.

Over the next nine minutes, Northern Iowa added to its lead, taking its largest advantage of the half at 30-15 with 5:40 remaining.  With momentum on the Panther’s side, the Aces clawed their way back into it over the final minutes.  Noah Frederking got it started with his first triple of the game before Evan Kuhlman and Beauchamp hit 3-pointers to cut the deficit to single digits (33-24) inside of the 3-minute point.

Five points by Shamar Givance inside the final minutes helped Evansville get even closer, cutting the gap to five (38-33) before UNI settled for a 40-33 edge at halftime.  Green led all players with 13 tallies in the half while Beauchamp paced UE with 12.

A 10-0 run opened the second stanza for UNI as they took a 50-33 lead with 17:38 left in the game.  Evansville chopped the deficit to as few as 14 points before the Panthers took would finish the day with the 83-61 decision.  UNI shot 54.7% in the game while going 11-for-22 from outside.  Evansville shot 40% from the field while knocking down nine triples.

Next up for UE is another road contest on Wednesday evening in Terre Haute when the Aces take on Indiana State.

 EVANSVILLE, Ind. – Following a break that has lasted 25 days, the University of Evansville men’s basketball team will return to action on Sunday, January 2 to face UNI inside the McLeod Center.  ESPN+ and the Purple Aces Radio Network will have the coverage.

Season Update

– Evansville’s last two scheduled contests (UT Martin/SMU) were cancelled due to COVID issues

– The Purple Aces played 12 games over the course of 30 days to open the year, but will go 25 days in between the 12/8 game at SEMO and the 1/2 contest at UNI

Last Time Out

– Prior to its longest break of the season, the Purple Aces took on Southeast Missouri State on December 8 in Cape Girardeau

– A late rally came up just short with UE dropping a 75-73 contest to the Redhawks

– Jawaun Newton, Shamar Givance and Noah Frederking recorded 15 points apiece while Blaise Beauchamp added 11 points off the bench

– Givance had another outstanding all-around performance, adding 7 assists and 6 rebounds

– UE had its lowest number of turnovers (5) since finishing with five against MIssouri State on 2/4/17

Top 8 Across the Board

– An outstanding opening portion of the season has Shamar Givance ranking the MVC top eight in points, assists and steals

– He currently ranks 5th in the league with 1.5 steals per game and 6th with 3.8 assists per contests…his 15.0 PPG is 8th

– On Dec. 6, Givance was named the MVC Player of the Week for the second time in his career after scoring a career-high 31 points against Southern Illinois before adding 15 points and 7 rebounds against Tennessee Tech

– Over the last four games, Givance has recorded 21.8 PPG…since scoring 7 points in the opener at Cincinnati, Givance has recorded an average of 15.7 PPG while scoring at least 11 points in all but one game

On a Roll

– Sitting at 14.0 points per game on the season, Jawaun Newton has been even better over his last seven contests, averaging 16.6 PPG including a career-high of 30 points versus Rice

– His rebounding numbers are the best in his career with his average improving each season from 2.2 (FR), 2.8 (SO), 4.4 (JR) and 6.0 as a senior in 2021-22…over the last 5 games, Newton’s average has been even higher, checking in at 7.6/game

– He set his career mark with 12 at Eastern Illinois while his season average ranks 7th in the league

Top of the Valley

– Antoine Smith Jr. earned MVC Newcomer of the Week recognition on Nov. 29 and has continued to play well since that time and has assumed the conference lead with 47.5% of his outside attempts finding the bottom of the net

– After opening the season going 1-for-8 from the field, Smith has converted 31 of his last 51 attempts – 60.8%

– From outside, Smith hit 3 of first 10 attempts but has drained 16 of his last 30…for the season

Scouting the Opponent

– Through their first 11 games of the season, UNI stands with a mark of 4-7 and 0-1 in MVC play following a close 71-69 loss in the conference opener in December

– The last two scheduled games for UNI have been cancelled due to COVID including the Diamond Head Classic vs. Hawaii and a home game against Wartburg

– AJ Green holds the team lead with 16.9 points per game…that total puts him in third place in the MVC…his average of 3.0 triples per game is also third in the conference

– Noah Carter checks in with 11.5 points while Nate Heise averages 10.9 points and a tema-high 5.1 rebounds per contest

THUNDERBOLTS START 2022 WITH 7-3 ROUT OF RIVERMEN

After outshooting Peoria 12-3 in the first period, Connor Chatham finally opened the scoring at the 16:20 mark, on the power play from Hayden Hulton and Brett Radford.  In the second period, the Thunderbolts added another power-play goal, scored by Brandon Lubin at 2:40, from Mike Ferraro and Cameron Cook to make it 2-0.  The Rivermen responded with a power-play goal of their own from Alec Hagaman 17 seconds later to cut Evansville’s lead to 2-1.  Shortly afterward at 5:00, Chatham scored his second goal of the night, unassisted on a breakaway to make it 3-1.  Later in the second period, Evansville scored twice to extend the lead to 5-1; Matt MacKay scored on a Peoria turnover at 14:16, while Chatham rounded out the hat trick, assisted by Brett Radford at 17:55.  Peoria struck back in the final minute to trim the lead down to 5-2 after two periods.

In the third period, Chatham scored only 1:20 into the period, a power-play goal from Lubin and Austin Plevy.  The goal was Chatham’s fourth of the game, becoming the first Thunderbolt ever to accomplish the feat.  Up 6-2, Charles Barber scored on a two-on-one rush to make it 7-2 at the 5:17 mark, assisted by Chatham and Plevy.  This made Chatham only the third Thunderbolt in franchise history to tally 5 points in a single game.  The Rivermen scored one final time on a 5-on-3 advantage at 10:16, bringing the score to 7-3, which became the final score.

Chatham led the way with his four goals and assist, while Lubin finished with a goal and assist.  Barber and MacKay scored one goal each, while Radford and Plevy each tallied two assists.  Brian Billett made 24 saves on 27 shots to pick up his 10th win of the season.  It was also Billett’s 18th win as a Thunderbolt, giving him the Thunderbolts franchise record for all-time wins breaking a tie with former Thunderbolts goaltender Braden Ostepchuk.  These two teams meet again on Sunday afternoon at Peoria Civic Center, face-off at 3:15 pm CT.

Cameron Cook opened the scoring for Evansville at 5:07 of the first period, assisted by Austin Plevy and new Thunderbolt Connor Chatham.  Peoria responded shortly afterward as Paul-Antoine Deslaurier scored at 9:26 to tie the game.  The Rivermen scored two goals in quick succession in the second period, first at 11:09 by Alec Hagaman, followed at 12:19 by Deslauriers, to give the Rivermen a 3-1 lead.  In the third period, the lone goal to make it 4-1 would come from Deslaurier, rounding out his hat trick at 2:17.  In his professional debut in goal, Ryan Edquist made 25 saves to keep the Thunderbolts in the game throughout the contest.  These two teams meet again on Saturday night at Peoria Civic Center, face-off at 7:15pm CT.
