USI Multicultural Center to host 2023 Rhythm Fest
The University of Southern Indiana Multicultural Center is excited to present Rhythm Fest 2023, featuring live music performances, dancing and food, at 6 p.m. Thursday, September 21 in the USI Performance Center. Doors will open at 5:30 p.m., and the event is open to the public at no charge.
Rhythm Fest will feature Dekar Justus and the Bodyguards, OBootney Lee, JustBrandon, Eli Youngblood and DJ Elo. Refreshments will also be available.
“The Multicultural Center is looking forward to Rhythm Fest this year,†says Deonte Turnley, Program Advisor for the Multicultural Center. “The performers are good at engaging and entertaining a crowd, and it will be a good opportunity for these local artists to showcase their talents to not only USI, but the Evansville community, too.â€

Quebec walk off Evansville in FLCS opener
Quebec City, Quebec – The Evansville Otters hit three home runs in the last two innings but a three-run walk-off home run gave the Quebec Capitales a 7-6 win in the first game of the Frontier League Championship Series on Tuesday night at the Stade Canac.
Tied at 2-2 going to the eighth, Josh Allen hit a towering go-ahead two-run homer to left. Quebec hit back-to-back solo blasts in the bottom of the frame to tie the game.
Evansville responded in the top of the ninth with Gary Mattis hitting a go-ahead solo home run down the left field line. Jake Green followed later in the inning, blasting a solo long ball to left field to give the Otters a 6-4 lead.
In the bottom of the ninth, a strikeout started the inning. A Quebec batter was hit by a pitch on a full count and the next Capitales’ batter worked a full count walk.
Justin Gideon then blasted the walk-off three run homer over the left field wall.
Braden Scott was brilliant in a seven inning start for Evansville. He allowed just one earned run on five hits with eight strikeouts.
The two teams traded two runs in the fifth inning. For Evansville, Mattis notched a single in the fifth and Bryan Rosario followed with a bunt base hit.
Green then walked to load the bases. George Callil came in clutch by lining a ball up the middle to score the first two runs of the game on a two-RBI single.
Quebec used back to back doubles to score two runs in the fifth inning.
Evansville closer Jake Polancic suffered the loss in pitching the ninth. Frank Moscatiello pitched the top of the ninth for Quebec and earned the win.
Mattis led the Otters on offense with two hits, two runs and a walk. His go-ahead homer in the ninth was his first long ball of the season with Evansville.
Evansville and Quebec continue the best of five Frontier League Championship Series on Wednesday night at the Stade Canac. First pitch is slated for 7:05 p.m. ET from Quebec City, Quebec.

Eagles return to action Saturday at Indiana State

The men’s eight-kilometer race begins at 8 a.m. (CDT), while the women’s 6k race follows at 8:45 a.m.

Both squads are coming off first-place efforts at the season-opening Stegemoller Classic two weeks ago. Freshman Zoe Seward (Rochester, Indiana) and junior Cameron Hough (Olney, Illinois) paced the women’s squad with first and second-place finishes, respectively. Seward finished the 4k course in 13 minutes, 47.7 seconds, while Hough crossed the finish line in 14:13.8.

The Eagles had seven of the top 10 finishers, with junior Katie Winkler (Santa Claus, Indiana) and sophomore Micah Peals (Terre Haute, Indiana) finishing sixth and seventh, respectively. Senior Aubrey Swart (Noblesville, Indiana), junior Emma Thompson (Mt. Vernon, Indiana) and freshman Sara Livingston (Jasper, Indiana) rounded out the Eagles top-seven with respective finishes of eighth, ninth and 10th.

As a team, the Eagles finished with 24 points, 11 better than second-place University of Evansville, which placed three freshmen in the top five. Kentucky Wesleyan College rounded out the three-team field with 82 points.

Senior Mitchell Hopf (Santa Claus, Indiana) and red-shirt freshman Alex Nolan (Evansville, Indiana) finished first and second, respectively, to lead USI’s men at the Stegemoller Classic. Hopf finished the 6k race in 18:06.1, while Nolan finished with a time of 18:17.2.

USI placed five runners in the top eight and seven in the top 13 as they finished with 17 points. USI’s unattached team was second with 48 points, while UE and KWC were third and fourth, respectively, with 72 and 111 points.

Juniors Dylan Bland (Holland, Indiana) and Brady Terry (Philpot, Kentucky) were fourth and sixth, respectively, while red-shirt freshman Cole Hess (Cannelton, Indiana) rounded out the Eagles’ top five with an eighth-place finish.

Freshman Landen Swiney (Du Quoin, Illinois) and sophomore Mukal Verma (Palatine, Illinois) rounded out USI’s top-seven with respective placements of 12th and 13th.
Josh Allen returns to Evansville
Evansville, Ind. – The Evansville Otters have signed INF Josh Allen for the Frontier League Championship Series.
Allen, who hails from Fort Meade, FL, was a member of the Evansville Otters’ 2016 Frontier League Championship team while winning the League’s MVP award.
He began his tenure in Evansville in 2014, directly after his career at the University of West Florida. He hit for a .290 average in his rookie year, with 30 RBIs and five home runs.
In his five seasons with the Otters, Allen has a .307 average, with 185 RBIs, 41 home runs and 77 stolen bases. His .354 batting average in 2016 is the highest in Otters’ single season history. He also has the most triples, hits, doubles and hit-by-pitches in Otters’ single season history.
He is in the top five of nearly every Otters’ offensive career statistics, including the most stolen bases in an Otters career.
All FLCS games will be streamed live with audio only coverage available for free on the Otters Digital Network on YouTube and televised coverage on FloSports in English and French.
Men’s soccer returns home for midweek game with Lindenwood
The Aces will face the Lindenwood Lions in only the second game in program history. UE won the first meeting last season at Arad McCutchan Stadium with goals from Phillip and midfielder Carlos Barcia. Wednesday’s match will welcome fans and their furry friends for the first-ever Pups at the Pitch. Fans are invited to bring their pets to the match and can get free photos taken with Ace Purple at the match!
Lindenwood comes into Wednesday’s game off a 3-0 loss to Utah Tech. The Lions are led by Cole Hutson on offense as he leads the team in shots on goal with three, and is one of three players to score this On defense, Lindenwood is led by Noe Bijou with 443 minutes played and is one of four Lions to start all five matches. Lindenwood is also led by a new head coach this year in Kris Bertsch who joins the program after five seasons as an assistant coach at Saint Louis University.
