A Vanderburgh County Jail inmate has been hospitalized after being attacked by a fellow inmate with a safety razor and boiling water.

On Monday, January 22, 2018 at approximately 10:05 AM a confinement officer observed inmate Sherrell Christopher Brooks leave his cell and enter the video visitation area of his housing unit. Brooks approached another inmate and threw a cup of boiling water on him, burning the victim’s neck and upper torso.

Mr. Brooks began exchanging punches with the victim as the officer entered the visitation room to intervene. The officer ordered both inmates to get on the ground, but they continued to fight. The officer then observed a laceration on the victim’s face. The officer then struck Brooks in the side in an attempt to make him release the victim.

After wrestling Brooks to the ground, the officer noticed a safety razor blade lying next to Brooks` hands. Brooks continued to struggle and had to be threatened with a taser before surrendering. The victim then exited the room and Brooks allowed himself to be handcuffed.

The victim was transported to the hospital for treatment of lacerations to his head and neck as well as burns to his upper chest and neck.

Mr. Brooks was in jail on charges including Criminal Recklessness, Resisting Law Enforcement with a Motor Vehicle, Theft and Hit and Run. Brooks will now face additional charges of felony battery.
