USI Women’s Golf opens 2017-18 with Screaming Eagles Classic

University of Southern Indiana Women’s Golf begins the 2017-18 season when it hosts the 22nd annual Screaming Eagles Classic at Cambridge Golf Course Sunday and Monday. The two-day event will be the 12th consecutive year the Screaming Eagles host their home tournament at Cambridge.

USI is one of 12 teams competing in this year’s tournament. Joining USI at Cambridge will be Great Lakes Valley Conference foes Bellarmine University, Maryville University, McKendree University, Missouri S&T, Quincy University, Rockhurst University and William Jewell College.

Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference newcomer Davenport University as well as Great Midwest Athletic Conference members Kentucky Wesleyan College and Trevecca Nazarene University also are set to compete at this year’s event, as is John A. Logan College.

Playing in her first collegiate event a year ago, USI sophomore Grace Davis (Valparaiso, Indiana) carded a 36-hole tournament-record 142 (72-70) to capture the individual title and lead the Eagles to a second-place finish. The University of Missouri-St. Louis won the last year’s tournament with a 36-hole Screaming Eagles Classic record 581, 21 strokes better than USI’s second-place score of 602.

Senior Taylor Howerton (Evansville, Indiana) led USI with a 77.31 strokes per round average as a junior in 2016-17. Howerton had a team-best nine top-10 finishes and five top-five performances a year ago.

Play begins Sunday at 8:30 a.m., followed by a shotgun start Monday at 9 a.m. Cambridge Golf Course is located about a mile south of the Hwy. 41 and I-64 intersection.
