Stockwell Elementary School is one of 51 locations across the state that will host the 19th annual Math Academic Teams for Hoosiers (M.A.T.H.) Bowl competition tomorrow, Feb. 26. Fourth through sixth graders from Oak Hill, Cynthia Heights, Sharon Elementary, Newburgh Elementary and Stockwell will compete tomorrow.

Information from the Indiana School Association of School Principals:

The M.A.T.H. competition is based on a team concept with no individual winners. Each of the four rounds consists of three team members working on eight problems while competing against team members from other schools. Students are seated together at tables on a gym floor or auditorium stage. Each problem is read aloud and projected on a screen, then teams are given 30 – 60 seconds to work cooperatively to choose the right answer. Problems are graded immediately and an individual scoring chart maintains a running team score as the evening progresses. While students are waiting to compete, they sit in a block to cheer for their teammates.

Students involved in the 2015 M.A.T.H. Bowl have studied standards dealing with Number Sense, Computation, Algebra and Functions, and Problem Solving. This is an extra-curricular activity, and no class time is used to prepare for this competition. Teams meet before school, after school, and during lunch or recess times to study math for fun.

The team members of the schools with highest scores in each of the five enrollment classifications at each site will be recognized with awards after the competition. Blue Class and Green Class include schools with sixth grade, while Orange Class and Red Class are schools without sixth grade. Yellow Class is for 4th grade only. In addition to local awards, the top ten teams in each enrollment
