Mediocrity Is Why Our School Children Aren’t Protected

Michael Leppert, Indianapolis public affairs and governmental consultant, wrote an article for The Statehouse News that I hope you get a chance to read. He answers the reaction of those who don’t want to do anything substantial to combat the risks we take with safety issues for our children while in school.

Leppert says we pretend our schools are safe, that when we do address the gun safety issue, it is with “mediocrity”. (To me that means we don’t really want to shake up the status quo, i.e. ALEC and the NRA’s control.) His example is Senate Bill 33 that passed the Senate this session, the bill that allows Hoosiers to bring a gun to a house of worship that is also on school property, under certain circumstances. Both Senators Vaneta Becker and Jim Tomes vote “yes” on the Senate floor. This bill reminds me of Senate Bill 78 in 2017 authored by Senator Jim Tomes. If passed, an employee or volunteer could bring a gun to school with them, if the school was on church property.

Watch YouTube – Emma Gonzales, Parkland, Fl student.  Or just any of the Parkland students victims of the school shooting. Mediocrity is what this and the other young students are fighting. They are depending on us, the adults, to propose and act on the rationale and credible gun laws and increased funding for mental health.

We need more students like these young people to speak out. Right now the sounds of the gun manufacturers and their lobbyists and their legislators are the only words being seriously considered in our legislative bodies. Mediocrity. We can do better.

  1. “He answers the reaction of those who don’t want to do anything substantial to combat the risks we take with safety issues for our children while in school.” Rubbish! Those not wanting to do anything “meaningful” are those once again condemning the NRA and calling again for more gun laws.
A law already exists prohibiting gun possession inside the school. What evidence is there linking the killer to the NRA? The NRA had no influence on this killers mind.
Have you even considered asking yourself how a person not supposed to be on school property was able to enter school property with an AK47, kill and maim innocent students, and walk out? This after being reported to law enforcement numerous times, including the FBI. The NRA had nothing to do with that.
What to do? Immediately cease and desist the political posturing and declare war on school shootings. If that means metal detectors and armed guards, so be it. Instead of meaningless legislation, study how the Israeli’s provide security for their school children. There in lies the IMMEDIATE, “meaningful” answer.

    • “Instead of meaningless legislation, study how the Israeli’s provide security for their school children.”

Here’s an Ace in the hole protecting their school children we don’t have Dannnnn.

Using 2012 statistics, only 170,000 Israelis were allowed to own their own gun. And just one per person. 80% of the 10,000 people who apply to have a gun each year are turned down. You under go police screenings and mental exams, go through 2 more hours of training even though you have just left their compulsory military service and must have a medical exam, (In case you’ve become as nutty as Mop Head), every three years.

You MUST also wave your right to confidentiality.

Israel doesn’t have the 2nd Amendment. We do.

Their children are killed mostly by terrorists. Ours by money.

      Live with it….
