We hope that today’s “IS IT TRUE” will provoke honest and open dialogue concerning issues that we, as responsible citizens of this community, need to address in a rational and responsible way?

IS IT TRUE that we would like to thank area road crews for doing an outstanding job in keeping our roads clean and safe during yesterdays winter storm?  …we are also very pleased that our first responders were really to handle any unforeseen emergency during the impending winter storm?  …we give five (5) cheers to our area road crews and first responders for a job well done?

IS IT TRUE that a couple days ago Channel 25 TV did an investigative piece on the McCurdy? …according to Channel 25 TV report that owner of the McCurdy have problems with the elevators, pest control issues, allowing free access to anyone wanting to enter the building because the main entrance doors are not locked, trash is allowed to accumulate in lobby and stairwells, deferred maintenance issues, they are defendants in over 60 plus lawsuits, allegedly not handling rental deposit refunds properly? …if the issues raised in the Chanel 25 investigative report are true it looks like the McCurdy may have City Codes, Vanderburgh County Board of Health Department and OSHA violations that need to be addressed?

IS IT TRUE that starting in January 2019 the Vanderburgh County School Board will have two well qualified and independent thinking School Board members?  …they are Ann Ennis and  David Hollingsworth?  …we expect that Ennis and Hollinsworth will encourage the EVSC Superintendent of Schools to be more transparent? … we don’t expect that the school board will be any making decisions behind closed doors?  …it may be even possible that the new School Board could even adopt a policy ending the practice of “nepotism”?

IS IT TRUE starting in January 2018 a new era in local county politics will begin?  …the Vanderburgh County Commision will have a banker, successful businessman and knowledgeable person in of how government works?  …we expect that County Commissioners Cheryl Musgrave, Ben Shoulders, and Jeff Hatfield will do great things for the citizens of Vanderburgh County starting January 2019?

IS IT TRUE  it been reported that a Congressional sub-committee heard testimony from Department of Veterans Affairs officials concerning computer problems that have caused GI Bill benefit payments covering education and housing to be delayed for months or never be delivered? …because of this unacceptable bureaucratic mistake that many veterans are facing serious debt problems or even homelessness because of this issue?  …that the Veterans Affairs official that caused this unacceptable problem was demoted instead of being fired?

IS IT TRUE that Kathryn Martin retained her position for the third time as Knight Township trustee in the recent mid-term election?  …that Democrat Martin crushed her opponent by a margin of 8 percent? …Ms. Martin beat her challenger, Johnny Kincaid, by 1,671 votes? …we congratulate Kathryn Martin for getting elected to a third term?    …we commended Mr. Kincaid desire to serve the public in an elected office?  …that Mr. Kincaid has run for several political offices in the past and always fell short of being elected?  …feel that Mr. Kincaid should approach the mover and shakers of his party and ask them to appoint him to a meaningful board or commission because we feel he has the talent and desire to serve us well?

IS IT TRUE that over the years that there has been talked about locating a “Slack Water Port” in the Evansville area?  …that the need for such a port is because of the goods being shipped by containers?  …that many of thousands of containers arrive at blue water ports in the United States every day?  …we wonder when will our locally elected city and county officials look into this issue?
IS IT TRUE  the committee that’s was in charge of moving and redesigning the Kids Kingdon at Sunset Park really did a bang-up job?  …we would like to thank Evansville Chief of Police Billy Bolin, Mayor Winnecke, the Kids Kingdon committee and community volunteers for building an awesome playground for the kids?
IS IT TRUE the old casino boat has left Evansville with lots of memories and has not only made lots of money for the owners but also added much-needed money to the city coffers? …that Tropicana on the other hand now has a plush new land-based casino that took $50 Million dollars to build and is an awesome upgrade from the old boat?  …the employees are very accommodating, the food at the buffet and deli are affordable and delicious, the gaming offerings are extremely impressive?…we highly recommend that you visit Tropicana-Evansville because its this regions best gaming establishment?
IS IT TRUE we want to commend Evansville Police Department media spokesman Jason Cullum for doing an outstanding job of keeping the public aware of the policing activities of the EPD?  …Jason Cullum is considered to be one of the top law enforcement media spokesmen in Indiana?

IS IT TRUE In honor of men’s health month, St. Vincent wanted to share a story with you about St. Vincent pediatrician, Dr. Jon Voyles who suffered a heart attack earlier this year and found himself in St. Vincent’s emergency room? … Dr. Voyles is encouraging men to see their doctor regularly?  …St. Vincent has produced a video with Dr. Voyles sharing his story?  …if you are interested in seeing this video or would like to speak to Dr. Voyles and his cardiologist, Dr. Frizzell so you can learn more about this story please contact Tangela Floyd, Director of Public Relations at 812-485-4044 or e-mail her at mailto:tangela.floyd@ascension.org?

Todays“Readers Poll” question is: Do you feel that elected officials should be allowed to award no-bid contracts to people who give contributions to their political campaigns?

  1. The TV 25 Report really ripped the McCurdy-Kunkle group. They must have had the green light from the 3rd floor of the Civic Center.

  2. “Democrats planned to use altered forms to fix mail ballots across Florida after deadline

TALLAHASSEE – A day after Florida’s election left top state races too close to call, a Democratic party leader directed staffers and volunteers to share altered election forms with voters to fix signature problems on absentee ballots after the state’s deadline.

The altered forms surfaced in Broward, Santa Rosa, Citrus and Okaloosa counties and were reported to federal prosecutors to review for possible election fraud as Florida counties completed a required recount in three top races….

One Palm Beach Democratic activist said in an interview the idea was to have voters fix and submit as many absentee ballots as possible with the altered forms in hopes of later including them in vote totals if a judge ruled such ballots were allowed….

The Department of State, which oversees elections, raised concerns about the altered forms, arguing that making changes to state forms is a criminal offense in Florida. The forms were forwarded on Nov, 9 to federal prosecutors.

Federal law defines election fraud to include preventing voters from participating in a federal election “through such tactics as disseminating false information” about the race, as outlined in an Oct. 25 letter to the state department by Assistant U.S. Attorney Harry C. Wallace in Miami.

Wallace, who is handling federal election complaints in Florida, declined to comment when contacted about an investigation into the altered forms.

“Making or using an altered form is a criminal offense under Florida law,” wrote Bradley McVay, the state department’s lawyer, when he referred the altered forms circulated in Broward and three other counties to federal prosecutors. “More fundamentally, altering a form in a manner that provides the incorrect date for a voter to cure a defect (or an incorrect method as it related to provisional ballots) imposes a burden on the voter significant enough to frustrate the voter’s ability to vote.”

    • A heavily Republican Florida county allowed some residents to vote by email, apparently illegally

In heavily Republican Bay County, however, election supervisor Mark Andersen acknowledged Monday that he had allowed some voters to cast their ballots over email, which is not allowed under state law.

Bay County was hit hard by Hurricane Michael on Oct. 10, and Scott issued an executive order on Oct. 18 extending early voting and expanding more voting locations in the eight affected counties. His order, The Associated Press reports, explicitly prohibited votes being returned by email or fax. Andersen defended his decision to let 150 people scan their ballots and email them in, telling NBC affiliate WJHG/WECP, “If you want to turn around and take away these votes away from voters because it’s not the normal prescribed issue, I would just say you ought to be ashamed of yourself because what we did is take care of voters.”

Democrat Andrew Gillum, whose race against Republican Ron DeSantis is being recounted, was not moved. “These are the stories that we know,” he said Monday evening. “Imagine the ones that we don’t.” Democrats have filed their own lawsuits, including one by Sen. Bill Nelson (D) seeking to force the counting of mail-in ballots postmarked before Election Day but not delivered in time. You can learn more about the election results from MSNBC’s Steve Kornacki and about the lawsuits and the recount below in Ari Melber’s report Monday night from Broward County. Peter Weber

    • Florida County Hit By Hurricane Accepted Votes By Email And Fax, Contrary To State Rules

Some voters in a North Florida county hit hard by Hurricane Michael submitted their ballots by fax and email — a practice that runs afoul of guidance issued by Florida election officials in October.

Bay County Supervisor of Elections Mark Andersen told CNN that he and his staff had worked with 158 voters displaced by Michael to allow them to cast ballots by email and fax, despite the Florida Department of State saying that voting by fax or email “is not an option.”

A press release from the Florida Department of State on Oct. 18 outlined the plan to extend early voting and vote-by-mail, and also said: “Voting by fax or email is not an option under the Executive Order.”

“In the hardest hit areas, communication via phone, fax and email remains challenging and would be an unreliable method for returning ballots,” the statement from the department continued. “Additionally, past attempts by other states to allow voters impacted by natural disasters to fax or email ballots have been rife with issues.”

  3. “…the food at the buffet and deli are affordable and delicious,…”
Huh? Have you even been there or are you just pimping for the casino?

The food at the Tap House is good. Good, but expensive.
The food at The Deli is good and reminds me of a true New York City deli. But it has New York City pricing, e.g., the prices are out of line.
The food and service at Cavanaugh’s is amazing. It is expensive but well worth it. Cavanaugh’s is one of the top five restaurants in Evansville; the others being Sauced, Madeline’s, the House of Como, and the Cork & Cleaver.
Which brings us to the Kitchen Buffet. It’s a joke. Overpriced for a casino deli. Poor food offerings. Understaffed. Poorly planned and laid out buffet arrangement. The food displayed on a video screen at the entry where you pay for your meal looks nothing like what is served on the dinner offering.
The management/kitchen staff of this buffet have no idea what prime rib should look (or taste) like. This “restaurant” receives the largest number of complaints of poor food and over-pricing of any of the restaurants located at the casino.
The Golden Corral buffet on Evansville’s east side offers better food, more options, and at a lower price.
Hopefully, this will be one of the first changes/upgrades to the casino as the new owners (Eldorado) management team begins their changes.

  4. The slack water port has been on the back burner for years. It is actually a great idea with working models around the country. The biggest proponent was attorney David Jones. I have no idea if it is still under consideration.

  5. Trump Won’T Visit Troops In War Zones Because He Doesn’T Believe They Should Be There

Donald Trump has not yet visited troops in war zones, after nearly two years on the job and despite his apparent love for military pageantry.

Trump repeatedly boasts about boosting the Pentagon budget, and he enjoys giving speeches before cheering troops or military hardware, but he has not visited troops in war zones, reported the New York Times.

His immediate predecessors, George W. Bush and Barack Obama, each made multiple visits to troops in Afghanistan and Iraq

Aides told the newspaper that Trump has not made visits to war zones because he does not really want them serving there in the first place.

They said a presidential visit would validate missions he doesn’t truly believe in.

Trump, who got a military deferment for bone spurs during the Vietnam War era, has also not made special trips to visit troops deployed at American bases overseas.
