An investigation is underway after a man armed with a baseball bat was shot by law enforcement officers during an encounter with a Federal Court Security Officer and a uniformed Evansville Police Department Officer.
The incident began at 11:18am when a man approached the main entry to Federal Courthouse at 101 NW Martin Luther King Jr Blvd. The man was armed armed with a bat. The federal officer working the main entrance area recognized the man from an incident in the building on Monday. During the Monday incident, the man was escorted out of the building by federal authorities.
At this time, it is known that the man used the bat to break out multiple door windows at the main entrance to the building. The federal officer was injured by flying glass while trying to prevent the man from entering the building. As the incident continued, an Evansville Officer arrived to assist.
During the encounter, the man’s aggressive behavior escalated. Because he wa s still armed with the bat and acting aggressively towards them, an officer attempted to stop his actions by deploying a Controlled Electronic Weapon, commonly referred to as a TASER. The TASER deployment was ineffective and the man continued his aggression towards the officers.
Believing the man’s continued violent behavior posed an immediate threat of serious bodily injury or death, the officers discharged their firearms to protect themselves.
Investigators have spoken with several witnesses, but are asking anyone who may have seen any or all of the incident to call Evansville Police at 812-436-7979.
The name of the deceased will be released by the Vanderburgh County Coroner’s Office. The names of the officers will be released per departmental policies.
