Eagles finish sixth in season-opener

University of Southern Indiana Women’s Golf shot a closing round 314 to finish sixth out of 13 teams in the 24th annual Screaming Eagles Classic at Cambridge Golf Course Monday.

The Screaming Eagles began their season-opening tournament with a 329 in Sunday’s first round and finished with a 36-hole tally of 643.

Sophomore Hannah Herma (DeMotte, Indiana) finished 18th in the 77-player field to pace the Eagles after closing the tournament with a five-over-par 77. She opened the weekend with a 79 and finished with a two-day total of 157 (+13).

Senior Abbey Leighty (Mt. Carmel, Illinois) had a four-over 76 in Sunday’s opening round to post the Eagles’ low round. Leighty finished in a tie for 19th after shooting 81 Monday for a two-round score of 157.

Great Lakes Valley Conference newcomer Lindenwood University captured the team title with a two-round score of 599 (299-300), while Missouri University of Science & Technology was second with a 609 (311-298). Indiana Tech (630/320-310), Lewis University (633/323-310) and Bellarmine University (640/329-311) rounded out the top five teams.

Lindenwood’s Josefina Haupt posted a two-over par 146 (74-72) to finish first, while Missouri S&T’s Taylor Ornelas (75-72) was a shot off the winning pace at 147 (75-72). Lindenwood’s McKenna Montgomery (149), who had the tournament’s low round Sunday with a two-under 70, joined teammate Noeila Rodriguez Chicote (150) on the All-Tournament team, while Indiana Tech’s Cecilia Heck (151) rounded out the All-Tournament award winners with a fifth-place finish.

USI returns to action September 23-24 when it competes at the Queens University Invitational in Charlotte, North Carolina.
