Attorney General Curtis Hill has joined attorneys general from 25 other states in a letter urging the U.S. Senate to quickly confirm Judge Brett Kavanaugh as the next justice of the U.S. Supreme Court.

“Judge Kavanaugh understands well that the proper role of the judiciary is to interpret rather than enact the law,” Attorney General Hill said. “Rather than following ideological and philosophical whims, Judge Kavanaugh will work to preserve, protect and defend the Constitution as it is written.”

President Donald Trump nominated Judge Kavanaugh on July 9. In their letter, the 26 attorneys general praise Judge Kavanaugh as someone well-equipped to fill the role that would be entrusted to him on the nation’s highest court.

“Judge Kavanaugh is an outstanding jurist with a proven commitment to upholding the Constitution and the rule of law,” the letter states. “We have no doubt that he possesses the qualifications, temperament, and judicial philosophy to be an excellent Associate Justice.”

The letter also states that Judge Kavanaugh would help provide a check against federal overreach.

“(W)e have a special interest in ensuring that the federal government respects the important role of the States in crafting and tailoring regulatory policy on matters of local concern,” the letter states. “Federal judges . . . must respect principles of federalism and the balance of power reflected in our Constitution. We are confident that Judge Kavanaugh appreciates that balance, and that he will protect the prerogatives of the States to manage their own regulatory framework.”
