ACLU PLANS A STUDENTS KNOW YOUR RIGHTS TRAINING SESSION

5

Students around the country are turning last week’s heartbreaking school shooting in Parkland, Florida into an inspiring push for change. In addition to grieving the lives of 17 classmates, students have met with the President, spoken their minds to Members of Congress, and taken to the streets and the internet. This is an incredible example of what people power looks like – what the First Amendment feels like in practice.

In the past few days, we’ve heard from students, parents, and teachers asking what students’ rights are – and whether schools can discipline students for speaking out.

Plans for coordinated student walkouts have been making national news and have already spurred disciplinary threats from some school administrators. That’s why we think it’s so important that everyone learns about their rights.

Join us on Thursday, March 1 at 8 pm ET for a Students: Know Your Rights! Training
(This link will take you to our People Power website.)

You’ll hear from student leaders and members of the ACLU legal team, like me, on our constitutional right to free speech and expression, and what it means for students who want to speak out. We’ll also share some details on how to report any possible First Amendment violations so that our team can track what’s going on around the country.

We’re inspired by the leadership and courage that students across the country have shown in response to the tragic shooting at Stoneman High School.

Whether you’re a young person or a parent, teacher, school staff orally, we hope you’ll join us to learn about students’ rights.

Students: Know Your Rights!
Thursday, March 1
8pm ET / 5pm PT

  1. What is the anti-American ACLU really up to when not doing important things like suing to remove a Santa Claus from a Christmas display?:

That is why the ACLU is launching a major new grassroots mobilization platform, PeoplePower.org, in response to the growing number of people who believe that Trump’s actions cannot go unchallenged.

We’ve hired a group of digital organizers who have worked with activist groups, the White House, and Bernie Sanders’ presidential campaign to help build and launch PeoplePower.org. With this platform, we hope to help organize the mass resistance to President Trump’s bankrupt policies. With a nationwide presence through our 50-plus state affiliates, the ACLU is well-positioned to take on the incredible responsibility of grassroots organizing coast to coast. This type of program is new for us at ACLU, but it is necessary if we are going to overcome the Trump administration’s attempts to curtail civil rights and eventually advance a 21st century civil liberties agenda.

On March 11, the ACLU will hold a “Resistance Training” town hall in Miami, Florida. An email ask went out today to the organization’s over 2.5 million members to organize thousands of grassroots events in communities across the country to watch the ACLU town hall.

The American Civil Liberties Union — note the word “American” in its title — complained Tuesday night about President Trump’s repeated use of the word “America” in his State of the Union speech.

In a written response to Trump’s speech, Faiz Shakir, the ACLU’s national political director, said:

Tonight, President Trump said the word ‘America’ more than 80 times in his speech. Yet, after a divisive first year, we hear and feel how exclusionary that ‘America’ is, with policies that have harmed so many vulnerable American communities. The ACLU stands ready to protect these communities, both in the courts and at the polls.

The American Civil Liberties Union hosted a nationwide training session where it emphasized the legal rights of Americans to protest the Trump administration.

“We will bring all the lawsuits necessary to defend these rights. … We’ll do the work in the courts. You do the work in the streets,” ACLU Executive Director Anthony Romero told the audience in Miami.

Romero said the organization is focused on defending the rights of immigrants and LGBTQ Americans, along with preserving First Amendment protections and women’s reproductive rights.

  2. CCO. Careful. This article may put you in Mueller’s sights for colluding with Russia. This article and the ACLU are nothing but RUBBISH!
Seriously. Actions they are advocating, (kill NRA/Republicans) and pass more gun restrictions will do ZERO good in preventing another tragedy. Or maybe you/they are not aware of the 1990 federal ban on guns within 1000 ft. of schools. Or the myriad state and local restrictions since then. How’d they work??
Many things could and should be done immediately. The ACLU will fight each with all their might.
