  1. Never mess with Sister Mary;

A number of 12-year-old girls were beginning to use lipstick and would put it on in the bathroom.

That was fine provided it was of a natural or neutral skin tone, but after they put on their lipstick,

they would press their lips to the mirror leaving dozens of little lip prints.

Every night the maintenance man would remove them; and the next day the girls would put them back.

Finally, the principal, Sister Mary, decided that something had to be done.

She called all the girls to the bathroom and met them there with the maintenance man.

She explained that all these lip prints were causing a major problem for the custodian,

who had to clean the mirrors every night (you can just imagine the yawns from the little princesses).

To demonstrate how difficult it had been to clean the mirrors,

Sister Mary asked the maintenance man to show the girls how much effort was required.

He took out a long-handled squeegee, dipped it in the toilet, and cleaned the mirror with it.

Since then, there have been no lip prints on the mirror.

There are teachers…… And then there are educators….

  2. Sorry I must have missed this, but why is the YMCA campaigning for money to create housing? I realize the YWCA provides shelter for abused women. Is the YM expanding it’s mission?

  3. Also, has anyone else wondered why we are seeing this flurry of news blurbs from Gail Riecken?

  4. Evansville, for awhile now, has been pushing to increase quality of life and other aspects/nightlife/attractions to draw the young adult (millienial) population to downtown and the region. As a college junior and apart of this group they are attempting to appeal to, I have been searching for summer internships and eventual jobs, but I have found that Evansville seems to be lacking just that. Inorder to get young people into a city, the vibrant city needs to have internships (see this as a trial run not only for the student to get a feel for the employer/job, but it’s also a test to see if the city is worth settling down/living in). Unfortunately, Evansville seems to be lacking internships (don’t get me wrong, some companies do offer lots of internships for certain majors, but you have to be in a certain field i.e. engineers or future accountants).

Now I have looked extensively for internships in the region, having found little (maybe I am not looking at the right websites or doing the best google search or maybe it is because I go to college in Northern Indiana so it is harder to hear about opportunities down there). I love Evansville and Southern Indiana, but it looks like my opportunities will be in Indianapolis and elsewhere. I know we have a lot of hard-working middle and older aged individuals in the area, but I worry Evansville will get a brain-drain situation.

It is sad that there are individuals (see myself and even lots of my friends) who want to move back to the region after college, which is what the city and growth organizations want, but we realize this is most-likely not possible. I just wonder how this can change…

Anyway, I apologize for this rant, but it is just frustrating when elected officials and other organizations state they want young professionals here, yet they do not encourage more internships and jobs.

Side Note: I’ve been a reader of CCO for a good 3+ years now, but this is my first posts in a reader’s forum.

    • The local newspaper and TV stations are always looking for interns
They’d put you to work the first day writing headlines and articles and doing on-air interviews with no training or supervision or editing

    • What is your undergraduate study in, and what fields are you looking for as far as internships?

      • DeltaBravo, I’m studying Business Management and International Business. As far as internships are concerned, I’m not too picky, except (which is kind of a big thing) they have to pay. This is due to current financial situations (I have done unpaid internships before and recognize the benefits of knowledge gained). I have even sent my resume to organizations that did not have anything offered, but I want to show I have skills they could utilize.

        • Gotcha. I can understand your frustration. I don’t know if it is becoming more common to have paid internships or not, they were largely unpaid when I was in college (this has been a long time ago). Perhaps a happy medium can be found by taking an unpaid internship for ‘X’ hours a week and then finding a part-time job you can work for the cash flow? That might open up your opportunities by not requiring the paid intership.

At any rate, I wish you luck.

Brain Drain is not pretty. Just look at what it has done to the city council.

    • Evansville has been a net exporter of talented college graduates for roughly 40 years. Brain drain is a way of life.

  6. I see that he/she is “apart” of the demographic that’s being sought to live downtown. I think ” a part ” is what’s meant here. I do hope this person is not an English major.

  7. Pressanykey- Valid (and sad) point!

Elkaybee- I am not an English major, but am human and make mistakes. If I could edit the above, I would.

    • Yep, the two things sadly missing from tbe COO comment area are “edit” and “delete” buttons

  8. Chris Christie just took a colossal dump on the heads of the sane Republicans who remain. He endorsed Donald Trump for President. Maybe he’s been promised a VP slot??

    • Bridge Commissioner is probably what he’s wanting in a Trump Administration which would be a Very Plump slot….
